What is wrong with this George III 6 pence?

What turns it so dark?

    from what I understand, all environments that cause toning will eventually cause the coin to turn black. the coins that we have where there are vibrant colors are the ones where the toning was interupted before that happened.

    Yes ... if you feel like sending it in to NCS for "conservation" and request they return the coin as raw rather than having NGC grade/slab it. I believe Marty and/or Russ have done this before sending coins in to PCGS.

    No, not even NCS will touch that coin. If you dip it, the black will turn a paste white color (not recommended).

    Additionally, to answer the question "What is wrong with this George III 6 pence?" the answer is nothing, it's not a bad looking coin.

    I've got a Louis XVI coin with a deep grey tone... not quite so far to blackdom as your sixer, but it's heading that way!
