Results from 100-card submission

I sent in 100 cards from 1985-86 and received 42 PSA 10s, 43 PSA 9s, 14 PSA 8s, and one PSA 9(OC). This is my first large submission; I'm curious how these results compare to others who have submitted this many cards at once. When selecting cards to submit I was shooting for only PSA 9 or 10 so 85% of my submission was graded as such. I'm pretty pleased with the results given that it was my first non-free submission.

42% 10's is excellent was it vintage or modern?
  • 1985 and 1986 so technically modern but still 20-year-old cards.

Care to put up your submission number and zip? 42% 10's is a lot better than I do, but I don't submit much from the 80's and later.

Noto, great job! I submitted 91 1978 Topps last month and received 12 10's 66 9's and 13 8's. Not bad either but your percentage is crazy good. Unless the head grader is your brother image

You know, it's getting rather comical (in an annoying way) when people say something is "20 years old" or "27 years old" in trying to make it sound old and valuable. Put it in the context people. 1) Something 20 years old is not old, esp since many here are in their 40 on up and 2) cards from the mid-80s to early 90s are still garbage - not matter how "old" they are. image
  • If by "garbage" you mean worthless then that's okay by me. I'm not doing this for investment purposes. In fact, the cards I sent in were Garbage Pail Kids (suddenly the lack of interest in value becomes very clear, huh?) so if anyone's still interested I'll post the # and zip.

notowellint, my comment wasn't directed at you but just a general knee-jerk reaction. I think everyone except 3 people in the world would say that 88 Donruss are not worth the cardboard they were printed on but one can say that they are OVER 16 YEARS OLD!!!!!
  • Nice shot, Steve Clark. Guy shares his results and you shoot him down with your little "garbage" comment. Knee-jerk this.
  • heh heh it's ok, I was not offended nor bothered by the comment. I realize that results like mine would be far more impressive if they were older but I am still satisfied and most importantly, it's fun. More than anything I'm pleased to find out that I do a fairly decent job of grading the cards myself before submitting them.

I kind of like the late 80's cards - my son collected them - the design is so bad on some of them that they're
    actually tremendously cool!

    Vintage/modern - scarce/abundant - attractive/fugly; it's all good.

Now, who's going to be voted off American Idol this week?

But what he sent in was literally garbage...get it?....GPK...oh nevermind, I'll quit while I'm behind...
  • I remember thinking as a kid the 1987 Topps baseball set was cool looking. I guess at least it's more unique...unlike 1988 and 1989.

And if there is any justice in the world, Scott will be booted off American Idol. Who is voting for this guy anyway?

noto .... I for one have heard this time and time and time again. Nothing against you Buc image but get over it. I collect what equates to garbage in vintage guys eyes. Does not bother me a bit that the monetary value will never be there to stand with yours. I can tell you that I will never buy a true "vintage" card because I can care less about them. They mean nothing to me. If I had them I would sell them for the silly prices they get so I can buy lots of cards that I really like, lots of garbage whooo hoooo

  • softparade, I see it the same way as you. I can understand why someone would be interested in vintage cards but I think a lot of vintage collectors have a hard time understanding why we'd be interested in more modern cards. I personally have no interest in vintage cards, I wasn't even born yet. I'm more interested in collecting cards that I remember owning or seeing in my childhood (and I'm sure that's a reason why some collectors that are older than myself are interested in the older cards).

I've got to go to work now but a quick reply. The cards that I collected as a kid were the 1970s and then after college, mid-late 1980s. Those years were what I knew and grew up with but as someone who does not have money to waste (everything I have been doing the past 2 years will be sold eventually), I cannot go back to those cards. I still have many unopened boxes from the 1980s but there is no joy in them knowing what I know now and what I have should have bought during those years instead. In part, it is the shame of not knowing better back then and the effort for me to spend my money wisely in choosing years that will hold their value (or at leat make it worthwhile financially). I fully agree about collecting for fun and would encourage everyone to do so, despite curmudgeonly ramblings from the likes of me. I just have to view all of this through the eyes of being financially prudent because I cannot throw away money for the fun of it (even though I would like to and envy those who do).
