Anyone here ever heard of these players?

My mom gave this to me in the early '90s. I dont know where it came from or how she obtained it but I have no clue who any of these players are. Anyone heard of any of these guys? Do you think this would be something that would sell for a decent penny? Its obviously players from the Negro Leauge and each autographed the 8x10.

The Indianapolis Clowns? OMG!!! I can't say I've ever heard of any of them, but it's still pretty neat, if they were actually professional ballplayers. You could probably find some history on it. On a sidenote, I'm old enough to remember when Bill Veeck hired a clown to coach 1st base for the White Sox. I'm absolutely sure that it's that same baseball clown who shows up in the first few scenes of Bull Durham. I remember one game where the clown coached 1st base for an entire inning standing on his head!!! Now that's funny!!

  • Max Patkin was the "Clown Prince of Baseball." He was indeed seen in Bull Durham. There is a little piece on him in the excellent "When It Was a Game 1" film by HBO. (No relation to the infamous WIWAG scam.) Patkin was doing his act in the 1940s, and I saw him still doing it in the late 1970s and early 80s as he would make an annual appearance at Smith-Wills stadium here in Jackson, MS when the local AA franchise was a Mets affiliate. Even as an old man he put on a great show, and I can vividly recall his antics.

Mark- that was a question on stump the Schwab the other day.Who was known as "The Clown Prince of Baseball"?, he appears in the movie Bull Durham. It was in the final showdown in a category about movies.

To answer your question, you need to contact the Baseball Hall Of Fame. None of these players in the photo are listed in the current Encyclopedia in the Negro League Section of Players. You may have a "rare find".

I believe all are still alive and do some signings when the Negro League do reunion tours (which they havent in a while). Robert "Peach Head" Mitchell did some campaigning in 2001 to get benefits (or increase benefits) for Negro Leaguers who played four years but never made it to the Majors. Maddix led the league in K's one year and seemed destined for the Majors but instead did a tour of duty in Korea. All the players I believe gathered in 2002 for "A Congressional Tribute to the Negro Leagues" in Washington DC (not to conflict with your time period)

Every time you respond with your idiotic statements I laugh at you. You are so predictable morrellwoman. I have burst your little bubble, and much like when the light is turned on and roaches run all around your ghetto home morrellwoman, you run around like a fool that has had his security blanket taken away. It happens everytime. Typical of a loser. Thanks for the laughs.

Idiot - always with the gender and crossdressing issues. Really wish you'd go back to your sandbox.

In looking at the picture I noticed that it may have been taken in a tropical setting like Florida. I think this is true from what I found on the net.
I would try to contact the African American Research Library in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Their info is in this story that mentions two or three of the players pictured.

    Story on couple players pictured

    The 75th year was 1995.

I'll bet these guys live in Florida and this library has a yearly event to honor the Negro Leagues.

Fascinating. Thanks for showing us the pic, it made me do some searching and learn a thing or two.

Thanks, Yes the time period I stated is dead on. She gave it to me in 1992 when I still lived at her house. Thanks for the input.
