I bought a 6-box rack case of 1986 Topps ($90 dlvd) cause I felt like breaking something and couldn't find anything worthwhile. I also wanted to test my theory that busting cheap junk-wax of the late 80s (86 and 88 specifically) can be profitable overall. Out of 6 rack boxes, there were only 3 PSA 10s of stars/semis/rcs/team cards, and two of them were this card (the other an A's TL). I had hoped to get at least half the money I spent on the case back from these three PSA 10s. The other bidder has 5 days left to decide whether he wants to pay 3 figures for this card, and I will offer the loser the other one at his high bid when the auction is over (could this be construed as shady?), but have we really reached a point where either a card is completely (and I mean COMPLETELY) worthless until it gets deemed perfect by a respected card grader and then is worth $100? Hard to believe.
ps- do I use parentheses too often?

(yes)

I often wonder the same thing - and I completely agree. It is hard to believe, and always has been. If the A's team card was raw, you couldn't get someone to throw water on it if it was on fire. But, give it a 10 - and, bam, its worth a C-note!

I am trying to add a link and here is the ebay item number in case 5189954896 to back up the points just made for an auction that just ended.
Collecting Tony Perez PSA and Rookie Baseball PSA
It is unreal that that one auction is going to pay for that case. Can't ask for anything more!

PS: What do you do with the thousands of cards that don't pass your "10" eye?
Putting together a set of 61 Fleer Basketball PSA 7 or better.

gg- I submitted 8 total cards that I thought had a shot at 10s and 3 came back. I usually will only submit a card that has a chance of garnering some decent bids because of player/team collectors. The rest of the cards (anything that won't sell for $5 raw) I sell in auctions in large lots and donate the money to the John's Hopkins Children's Center.

I think there is the perception that '86 Topps leader cards aren't as difficult as the base cards because of their white borders (vs. black).
How come you don't leave positive feedback to forum members?
And by the by, I think the Leaders cards are easier because there is no real border and off centering is hard to see.

Answer: When the seller thinks the guy on the card is a Hall of Famer and advertises it as such, but then finds out it was a slightly above average player and notifies the bidders who promptly cancel their bids.
That's a good one. I think I'll send it in to Maxim.
