K-214 REVOLUTION IN BAVARIA, 1918, Cast AE medal, 57.8mm, wt. 59.2g, UNC.
Satirical to commemorate the historical event of the Bavarian Diet passing the decree to depose the Wittelsbach dynasty and a republic then proclaimed in Bavaria.
Obverse: Bavarian social democrat Kurt Eisner sits on the Bavarian lion and forces a Jacobinier cap over its ears. Inscription: “And Prime-Minister am I.”
Reverse: Death, throwing the doors apart; one decorated with the Bavarian coat of arms and marked with the date 1180, which suggests the Regentship of Wittlesbacher since 1180; the other door is dated 1808 and inscribed “Verfassung” (Constitution). In Deaths right hand he holds a balance scale with a pipe on one side and a crown on the other. On the ground below lies the king’s shattered crown and orb. Inscribed: “Revolution in Bavaria.”
Goetz was a fervent supporter of the Bavarian monarchy, over-thrown by the bizarre Eisner, who boasted, “The Wittelsbach’s ruled Bavaria for 700 years and I got rid of them in seven minutes!” Eisner was later killed by an assassin.
Goetz spelled Eisner’s first name with a “C’…intentional? Probably.
