PSA '52 Mantle??

Any idea on what this is? I looked up the cert# and it's not in the PSA database. Ths scan of the card is kind of blurry, so could this just be a photoshop scam?

This card has been brought up before - my guess is that the cert. # was deleted by PSA and it's the original flip that someone cleverly put into a blank PSA holder from some cheap card - it is believed that if the opened holder is "sonic" sealed - it may look pretty good under casual scrutiny.

Here are the flips around that number:

    Year: 1993
    Brand: MAGIC-GATHERING
    Player: LICH
    Variety: BETA
    Grade: 9
    Year: 1941
    Brand: PLAY BALL
    Player: TED WILLIAMS
    Variety: N/A
    Grade: Not Holdered, Altered

If the guy were to look at the holder with a 10X loop, he would possibly see where the thing was "re"sealed?
This is just a guess on my part.

We never did figure out the whole story with that card, but there is zero question in my mind that the card in that picture is a counterfeit.

Plus, if PSA deleted the flip, unless their program allows for a deletion comment page, they have no idea why they deleted it - as far as they are concerned, the number doesn't exist?

Has anyone contacted PSA the last time this flip came up? For all we know, the flip is "fake" also!

That's certainly one strange listing, isn't it? I wonder why, if the scammers put this much effort into it, they don't scout around until they come up with a valid cert number for a real Mantle PSA 2, and use that cert number instead? Is there any way to trace the history of a cert number that doesn't come up anymore?

I think only PSA can answer that question. I just emailed them and linked the auction with it. I'm hoping they contact me and let me know what happened.

As I said before, they deleted the flip - was there crap going on before to force them to delete the flip or did someone send it in. Is this a fake flip and holder? Who knows!

    His story is hilarious!

"The holder was free of marks when I got it. Now it's a little scuffed up from me trying to see if this thing is a fake or not."

"I don't have the time to get to the bottom this, i'm moving to sunny FLA. so i'm putting it up to the highest bidder. I must sell it as a reprint, because i'm no crook"

"I'll take only checks and casiers checks or money orders on this one. I'm not doing returns either"

Its an obvious scam...someone bought an original mantle and broke it out, then inserted a fake inside.

Im not a mantle expert, but itsnt the yellow box all wrong? I thought you couldnt have black all the way around it?

Kind of off subject, put what would a PSA1 or 2 Mantle go for?
  • I'm not sure if this seller is a scammer - it looks exactly like the 52Mantle he did pay $3000 for a while back...i think he might have errantly bought this, and is tryiing to pass it on.

    Good for you.
  • Perhaps Allen is right, but...

First seller was in Florida (there seem to be a lot of shady cards coming from there)

This one is in New York. If it was in New York City, I'd ask him to see the card...

Looks to me that the case is cracked on the lower right. This would allow it to be opened and the card changed:

That's a new one ... a card in a PSA slab being sold "as a reprint." I'm guessing he (or the person who scammed him prior to his own scam) botched the reholdering, so now it looks obviously tampered with. Thus the ass-covering reprint language.

The current seller left positive feedback when he bought this card. he now claims it may be a reprint? He bought this card for 3k too. I am assuming it is the same card. We are now at the point where some scammer took a PSA slab created a cert and slabbed his own Fake Mantle? Is that where this stands?
