K-506 GUSTAV NACHTIGAL, 1935, Cast AE medal, 72.6mm, wt. 152.4g, UNC.

50 Year commemorative medal of Nachitgal’s founding of German colonies in Africa.

Obverse: Bust left with name.

Reverse: Eagle with flag and colony names inscribed along edge.

Nachtigal, Gustav , 1834–85, German explorer in Africa. He went (1869) on a mission for the king of Prussia to the sultan of Bornu. He visited the central Sahara region and reached Khartoum in 1874. In 1884 he annexed Togoland and the Cameroons for Germany.

  • Thanks for showing this medal, however is just bland, not up to Goetz's usual "in your face" style. Guess this one "paid the bills".

    I wasn't particullary overjoyed with the acquisition either but it filled a hole. Very lackluster to his normal fare and being commissioned, did probably help put the bread on the table. He also was occupied with the Nazi's at the time...

    Luderitzland - just looked that up and found it was South West Africa - now known as Namibia.

    The portrait is dead on as usual but the reverse seems weaker then others.
