Price for grading commons - HELP

I am collecting cards towards a player set in the registry, and many of the cards are not worth more than a dollar, so that even in PSA 10 they would not be worth the price of grading of commons. Do dealers (or big collector's) get a deal on grading commons at under $1/card somehow? Otherwise, I don't understand why people would pay to get the cards graded. You see PSA 10's of common players selling for $3-$4 on E-Bay all the time.

Any info would be well-appreciated.

I dont know of too many player sets that are commons. It seems to me that most of the better bidding wars are from two people from the registry. I guess it depends alot on the issue and the player you are talking about.

$3 to &4 for a PSA 10 common? What sets and years are you talking about?

  • Most of the commons in the 1991 TOPPS Desert Shield cards only sell for .99 or even .50 and if they grade a 10 they would sell for over $100.00

I will not buy a common card unless it's under .99, most of them I get them for under .99. That's just part of trying to complete a set.

What year and cards are you building.
  • I am collecting Keith Hernandez cards right now. Ungraded, these cards are worth less than $1 (except for rookies, rare issues). Graded, the commons don't get more than a few dollars a PSA 9, and maybe $8-$10 at PSA 10. Yet many of these commons are graded. How do people afford them?

Well, here's one I won today:

    PSA 10

    . . . if you consider the NFL's all-time rushing leader a "common".

    I know, I know, it's a 2004 Topps. But still. I don't even like Emmitt Smith, but I couldn't resist.
