What's the difference between the S.A. 5 S. P/L's and Proofs?

I cannot tell the difference between the S.A. 5 Shilling P/L's and Proofs? What's the easiest way of telling the two coins apart. I think I am going blind...

the PL's will have mirrored fields like the proofs, but the rims will not be as sharp. For the proofs (at least in my experience) you can almost shave with the rim of the proof coins and the PL's are not nearly so well struck.

It's easy, HG. If your coin is PL, a proof coin will be sharper. If your coin is proof, a PL coin won't be as sharp. image
