'35 Peace

I can't get a good enough photo to ask for a grade, so I'll just show it off I guess. The obverse is as clean as I've seen on a Peace dollar.

Real nice. I think a well struck Peace is about the nicest coin we've released.

Is the ding just past 12:00 smaller in person? How 'bout the tags on the "S" and "F" in the same location on the reverse?

This is my MS64 PCGS 1935 by comaprison. I'd say yours is 65 all day:

    Hey Weiss -

The little mark on the rim at 12:00 is just that - a little mark. It stands out in the picture worse than it really is.

Her nose and lips have minor marks, and a few decent marks on the reverse legend. The rays are nice and clean.

I agree, a perfect Peace dollar is my favorite coin.

Very nice. You didn't ask for a grade but I'll still
say its at least a 65, good shot at 66.

Thats a damn fine looking 35. fields are clean, cept the mark on the obverse and the mean hit over ONE on the reverse. I would call that coin a 65 - it afterall, does have the overall "look" of a 65, but pcgs tends to be non forgiving of big hits on peace dollars. I think the ding over ONE will put it in a 64 holder. But in the end, who the hell cares, they can call it a VF20 if they want, its still a beautiful coin.

Judging by the pic, bacc, I'd say the cleanliness of the portrait area should ensure a 65, if you were to get it graded. But you never know. Is there some light fingerprinting near the right of the date?

I could see it in an MS66 holder. Strike is ok with only minor abrasions. Luster looks top notch.

  • Very clean for a peace dollar.

PT - The hit over the "ONE" isn't as serious as it seems - it's more of a rub than a hit; there's no depth to it at all. If the mark you're referring to is the spot in the field in front of Miss Liberty, that's a brwon tone spot - there's a few on the front. I'd love it if it were gone, but I'm not messing with it.

OIB - No fingerprinting on this one.

I can't get the minor abrasions to show. The middle of the neck has a couple light abrasions.

As far as a grade, I picked it up off a bid-board for $76 which is roughly MS64 money. There were 2 other bidders. I couldn't find any excuse to give it less than a 64, but it jumped out at me as a 65. To tell you the truth, it looks better than my ANACS 1922 MS66.

I wanted Tom DeLorey to take a look at it, but he wasn't in. He's tough. In my opinion he undergrades several of his own coins for sale. The gentleman who did look at it said he though it was a 63. I'm no expert, but I have a couple graded 64s that look like they've been through a wood chipper compared to this one.

Here's the ANACS 1922 MS66 in comparison. I like this one as a 65 myself. The lustre on this one may have pushed it up a notch in the grader's eyes.

bacc, when you stopped in and asked about that coin (I didn't know what coin it was), I was right to the left of you (I recognized ya but you were in the middle of asking the question, I didn't want to interrupt by introducing myself.)

You are one BIG TALL person!

Thus, I am renewing my resolve to be nicer to you. image

If I see you by there agin, I'll introduce myself.

BTW, I wouldn't put too much stock in the 63 opinion you got, to me that was an obviously safe guess because he was interrupting himself from something else to glance at it. Catch Tom sometime or other and he'll stare at it, with and without a loupe, and point out to you all the this's and that's about it, I'm sure.

You were there OIB? That's crazy. Damn, I was in a hurry and wasn't paying attention. I think there were several people in there that day. I think it was Tuesday around noon maybe?

I was a little miffed when he told me 63.

Yeah, I really didn't want to bother anyone else because I was going to have Tom see it anyway. I saw he was busy.

What were you there for? Anything good?

I sure was, I felt bad after you left I didn't say hi, but I was in a hurry too and then you were out the door. Anyway no, don't give 63 a second thought, as I said I think that's an obviously safe guess from a guy I don't even know there - I think he does ancients.

Don't throw it in the junk box until Tom gets a look at it. image

If it's 64, 65, or 66 he'll point out to you the reasons why he comes to whatever his opinion may be. Hope to see you there sometime, I'll say hi!

Oh, I was just there lookin' around - often at stuff that's no problem to stare at 'cuz I can't afford it, like the gem Walker proof sets and high grade key dates. I also was checking out their more "normally" priced stuff, but as it was I just walked out with a couple rolls of the new Buffalo nickels. It's a fun thing to do on my lunch hour.

I'm usually there at some point any given week, so I'm sure our paths will cross again. image

I got outta there fast before I started thinking about buying something else that I couldn't afford. I stop in maybe once every 2-3 weeks - usually between noon and 2pm.

    Hope to see you.

Hope to see you! My time would be somewhere between noon - 1:00. I quite agree with the need to vamoose sometimes before I buy something I ought not to! image

If you ever are definitely gonna be there on a day, PM me before and I'll make it a point to show up.

And if your dollar's only a 63, judging by the pic, I gotta go back to grading school! image
