US Proof and Mint Sets

Went to visit a couple of coin shops in Melbourne, Australia and had a look at some of the US Proof and Mint sets that they had in stock.

They were wildly over priced and very poor quality. One shop wanted A$120 (US$90 +/-) for a 2000 Proof set - the cheap one. Another wanted A$30 (US$23 +/-) for the cheaper 1970 Proof set.

The thing that surprised me was that while the reverses of almost every proof set in one coin shop were very, very nice and seemed to have nice mirrors, the obverses were foggy and dull.....They were still in the mint packaging and there was no visible damage to the cases.

Is this normal for the 1970 Proof sets or was it due to the way or where the coins might have been stored?

Sunlight can affect proof surfaces over a long period as can other light sources.

A lot of the older mint and proof sets are developing problems or are already always damaged.

Then there's the theory that someone spilled Fosters on the proof sets image
