My first Gold coin, help with grade

GeomanGeoman Posts: 2,491 ✭✭✭
All,

I picked up my first Gold Coin recently. Actually, it was included in a collection of coins I bought from a non-collector. He knew it was a gold coin, and had his collection appraised at the local dealer at my suggestion. Then this non-collector turned around and offered his collection to me, if I would match the price of the dealers. I took him up on the offer, because I wanted the Morgans in the collection. I am really not interested in gold. But I have no idea how to grade these coins. It's a 1914 $2.50 US gold coin. I'll post a lousy picture below; and was wondering if someone would guess on the grade, and give me a ballpark figure what it may be worth. Thanks in advance!

OK. At the risk of showing my grading shortcomings, I will guess MS63/64. Don't know the value, though.

The incuse indians are super hard to grade. I'll give a range since I can't tell by the pic: AU-58 to MS-63

These are hard to grade, it's a nice coin. Raw these can be had on ebay last year for around $125 to $150 range.

Welcome to the Gold Coin Club. I could not grade one of those things if my life depended on it. I would not even know how to tell you whether or not it is authentic.

Ok, I wanted to see what people thought before I said anything.

My thoughts on this, it would grade maybe AU-50, but again, that is just a guess. It looks like the "bead band" in the feathers is very slightly worn. However, maybe it could be a weak strike. I will admit I know next to nothing about gold. Another concern is it could be counterfiet. I may bring it back to the dealer that originally looked at it, and see what he has to say. I didn't actually hear for myself what the dealer told this non-collector. Another good suggestion was to show it to another dealer. So I may just bring it down to the next coin show, and ask for opinions. But, I "paid" approximately $150 for this coin. Hope it wasn't a "learning mistake."

$150 is about right, I haven't brought one of these in a year or so. As far as it being counterfiet it's less likey a coin this common and that grade would be worth the time when you could put on a better date to defraud people IMO. But who knows stranger things have happened

Just submit it to PCGS for grading. Even an AU in the holder should get you your $150 back. I had about thirty of the little Quarter Eagle Indians about ten years ago, kept the slabbed ones and lost a little on reselling the raw ones. Too many counterfeits out there along with too many that would get BB.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

I'll guess AU55. Looks like it may be cleaned. Also, this series is heavily counterfeited so be careful!
