Investing in high grade Morgan(s) - Follow up ?

With the hot market in Morgans, specifically in Carson City issues, how wise/foolish would it be to get rid of my CC set for a single MS 67 CC Morgan?

  • My best bet is the 1903-O in MS 66. You can pick these up in the $800 range. A common dtae in the same grade is $300.

    Foolish I say...

CC's will ALWAYS have a demand. Your proposal would be betting on one conditional rarity. From an investment standpoint, have the diversity of a set that collectively would be easier to liquidate than one conditional rarity.

    Followup question:

What about upgrading the CC set? Not necessarily a 67 but just higher grades.

Are these prices going to keep going up and then drop, thereby I lose out?

Or is the market going to sustain its current levels and my CC set maintains its value?

I know this is a crystal ball-type question but I thought I would throw it out there for you.

Thanks everyone for the great advice so far! image

  • What grades are in your cc set in now?IMO upgrading is always a good thing. As I have stated in other threads I was attempting the Morgan set in high grade (no I am not a doctor, lawyer, etc just a normal working person) and reached the point that I would have to sacrifice quality to finish. So what I did was sell/trade 55 Morgans and am in the process of completing the CC set with major varieties in as high a grade as I can do. Will not be the finest but will be the best I can afford. In the long run I think CC's will survive swings better than the rest of series (except for certain dates). Does this help?

    1879 - 30
    1880/79 - 63 rev 78
    1881 - 63
    1882 - 63
    1883 - 63PL
    1884(2) - 64
    1885 - 64
    1889 - 10
    1890 - 58

  • next question is are YOU happy with the coins or are there spots where you would like to see improvement. If so improve those coins, then when you reach that level look again and so on until you've decided your happy!
