Is anyone aware of plans to make a market in S mintmark gold?

LongacreLongacre Posts: 16,717 ✭✭✭
I heard from a reliable source that a well known, large dealer is buying up vast quantities of S mintmark gold, and will be "making a market" in it at some point in the future. Has anyone else heard this? PS. I sold all of my S mintmark gold over the past year and a half, so it is not me who is making the market. image

Yes, I have heard that a "well-managed promotion" is in the works. There are a lot of great (and underrated) dates and great history associated with SF gold. A reference book would be very useful.

Oh great, just one more thing I will be thinking about buying.

I hate having A.D.D. when it comes to coin collecting.
  • Leave the S mint stuff alone! I have a hard enough time affording it, let alone Philly and CC!

OK, straight answer please: I'll be needing a common or slightly better date S-mint $20 Lib for my type set in nice 58 or 62. Basically, I want the best looking coin I can get for well under twice intrinsic value, and it's gotta be an S. Any reason to think such things will be getting more expensive on account of this, or is it mainly involving earlier or higher grade coins?

  • it would be next to impossible to do this(over a short period of time) and make a large sum of money.

Straight answer: Your purchase will not be affected by this promotion. The coins that will likely be promoted will be rare date S mint gold (ie. 64-S half eagle, 65-S eagle, and the like).

I sent mirabela a PM with my super secret picks for undervalued S mint gold. Just my guesses, though. image

Have to be a pretty big promo with lots of money behind it.....

The only way I see a $20 Lib type coin in 62 being a problem is if the Coin Vault is the purchaser of the coins.....

I have my 1904-S, had to pay the extra $5 for the S instead of the P coin.....

The 1904 $20 Lib is the ultimate generic coin. You cannot swing a dead cat at a coin show without hitting a few hundred. I would gladly pay the small premium to get a better date for a type set.

That was my general feeling, plus I wanted a San Francisco coin to go with my phily Saint.....

"S" Mint pre-1880 gold is probably ripe for promoting. Lots of scarce and rare dates, historic tie-in to CA gold rush. Makes sense to me.

I only have one "S" mint pre-1880 gold coin, my VF 1866-S No Motto $5. Cool date!

Thanks for the update. I've been buying the first year of issue of the San Francisco mint, especially the quarter eagle and half eagles. I have a small hoard of them now and I will wait until I get at least 10x bullion on them before I will consider selling.

MIRABELA----here's your coin. It would take a German contact to do it however.

Notice to all---this thread should help the S gold a little, shouldn't it?
    Have a nice day
