Story about a STAND-UP guy....

I've been purchasing raw & graded Morgan Dollars from a fellow in Washington St. for a few years now from

both his eBay site & website. This past December, I purchased a 96-O M.D. raw for $150. I decided to send it

to ANACS for grading. Much to my dismay, it was returned today as "Whizzed- AU details- net EF-40." It was

purchased as a AU-53. I contacted him and he immediately made good on the transaction.image

With alot of posts here at the forum about deadbeat wannabees, salesmen, vendors, whatever one would

like to refer to those types; I thought this post might lend a positive light for all the good guys out there who

do make mistakes and make good on them monthes later.

Here's to you, JACK...A STAND-UP GUY.image

Is he really a standup guy? So you found out what ANACS said about the coin. How many others still have the coins raw and are relying on his grade?

Not such a standup guy if you ask me.

Depends.......if he made an honest mistake and fixed it - that's pretty stand up. If he did it on purpose and was hoping not to get caught, you caught him, and he made it good to keep you from ratting him out - he's not a stand up guy.

We don't have enough info to decide...........but you might.

Welp, in the past I've purchased several raw coins from him and had them graded. They've either come back as he stated or 1 point higher. This is a first with one of his coins. As far as other buyers are concerned, I'm not aware of it. As I've stated...People do make mistakes. MOST wouldn't make good on it almost 6 months later. That's the point I'm most trying to make.image

  • Razor,
You are correct in my experience i once bought a raw Saint on Ebay. Sent it to PCGS AND it came back in a body bag cause it was cleaned. seller couldn't care less i sold it to another dealer for just over spot.I never buy raw anymore.

Yea, I think you could probably put me in that camp. If I sold a raw coin (and I always have a return period on all my sales) and didn't hear about it for 4 months, then the buyer wanted to return it because he now had an opinion that it was whizzed, it would have to be a pretty special client that I would take that coin back on. Especially since it appears the 'whizzing' (if it in fact was) wasn't serious enough to be spotted by either the seller OR the buyer. I would say, under those circumstances, I would be unlikely to take the coin back, unless the coin was SOOO unique in some way that I could be sure that it was in fact the same coin. Sounds like you have a good enough relationship with the seller that he trusts that you would not attempt to pull a 'switcharoo'. Thats a good relationship that is worthy of your continued business, because that level of trust can't be bought...only earned.

Bought a 16D merc from a local dealer at a show one time - checked it against counterfeit guides I had access to at the time before I bought it. Sent it off soon after purchasing it to ANA (back when they only did photo certs) and it came back fake. Took it back to the guy and he made good- BUT - later found out from another customer of his that this dealer KNEW the coin was fake - bought it knowing so from an estate and had been trying to unload it for a long time. So, I pity the person that eventually ended up with it and has not had it authenticated - and the dXXn dealer is still in business image

  • I would be wary of this dealer in the future. 'Whizzed' coins should not be that hard to detect. His knowledge is suspect.
