How does one differentiate between "orange peel" and "die erosion"

I for one think it looks good no matter what it is. There was an earlier thread explaining "orange peel" as a state of new dies of proof coins just after hardening.

"die erosion" was called well, the erosion and wearing of dies. How can you tell which is which? I have a few peace dollars that have "orange peel" looking fields, and I think it looks great. is it generally a good thing or a bad thing to most people? (notice i am specifically talking about business strike coins, not proof coins.

In the case of the "orange peel" effect we're dealing primarily with newer dies, which would/should not display some of the characteristics that those with "die erosion" would. Some examples of what qualities might accompany eroded dies would include: lack of strike detail, die cracks, diminished luster, etc.

  • I believe this is die erosion.
