It all depends on lighting for me, I can take pics of the same coin in different areas and it looks like a completely different coin.

    Just my humble opinion.

I agree, it's the lighting. They're making sure that all the luster shows.

A lot of the "Omaha Bank Hoard" have sold on Teletrade, so I did a quick search there for this coin hoping to get lucky, and see another pic.

    No luck.

I see what you mean though. There seems to be some funny stuff in the fields, and the wings of the eagle.

  • Every one of his coins have this clarity and lack of color that makes me suspicious. Has anyone bought one and compared it to the photo?

IMHO it's just the lightning, and it's also a scuffy holder....

  • It looks like he used those flouresent <sp?> "kitchen" lights for illumination. ? The ones that have that slight pinkish hue to them ?

You can still see many of this horrible hoard every week in Heritage's exclusively internet and continuous auctions, and compare the images. To paraphase an old saying, you can dress em up, but you still can't sell em.

  • If it helps any, I bought a common date PCGS certified Buffalo Nickel from them. The picture and the actual coin matched wonderfully. No problems from that single experience.

pic looks a bit juiced. Using two colors of lighting, makes it look funny.

  • Looks like they use incandescent AND flourescent lights. They may use "Unsharp Mask" in photoshop too... I think it is mostly lighting... c

Here's another picture of the same coin. (Be advised, since it came from the archive, you may have to be a registered member, and log in.)

Since the picture in question is fairly small, it's hard to tell if any "active enhancement" took place, or just benificial lighting. But there are some distracting marks on the Heritage picture that aren't as apparent on the picture posted here.

    Decide for yourself.

  • It looks somewhat similar to what I get with the Ott-Lite/Reveal bulb combo on bright white silver.
