I have gotten many ms67's from pcgs for wheats over the years, thought this was a lock 66. More thoughts below.

I was going with MS65RD being what the label would say but wanted to say MS66RB myself

  • I'm not very confident on copper but will guess MS 65 BN anyway.

Man, I'm really screwing this up, it's ms and brown, second obv shows beard better than first

well, at least i got the MS and BN part right image

it seems a bit mushy and i find the hits in some of the letters a little distracting. That's why i went with 65.

I'm probably wrong but that wouldn't be a first for me. image

I'm going to grade it MS66BN.

It's nice! If I am right, do I win it?

I thank you all for your opinions. There is not a mark on this, no rub, beard detail is strong. I would be more OK with 58 than 62, to tell the truth. In this same order, I sent five crack-out pcgs 66 Red wheats, trying a second time for 67's, ALL came back 65. Never done a resubmit for presidential review, should I on this?

BN coins need to retain, glow, luster or shine to garner GEM grades. Cool colors with glow also help as does some red, a RB side. That coin has great design preservation but the brown (oxidation) is heavy and taken the coin far beyond the gem grade. A little more corrosin and pitting would probably start occuring.

    Point taken, thanks.

It's very unusual for a copper coin with a BN designation to get above 65, and even to get to 65 it needs to be exceptional.

Even so, 62 does seem a bit low to me on this one. (I would have thought 63BN, maybe 64BN.) I wonder if they dinged it in the eye appeal department because of the streak going through the obverse?

I wondered about that also. Thanks for the info on brown grading, it is the first ms brown I've submitted.

My initial thought was 63BN. Lack of luster certainly limits the grade. Not worth the cost of postage to get it up a grade, tho.

Thanks, this was a case of not knowing what I was doing.

Thanks for pointing that out. I never knew that about grading copper.

It looks like friction on Abe's cheek. I'll bet MS62 was a compromise grade. Also, I don't see a bit of luster.
