Best seated dime cherrypick during last 10 years

This is a test for the seated variety collectors on the message board ... why am I so excited about cherrypicking this seated dime off eBay? Those of you who are members of www.seateddimevarieties ebook can look up the discovery. Hint: this is an R8 coin and was an unknown die state until this jewel appeared.

Will post the answer tomorrow...Good luck

It's not supposed to have any stars? It has a partial drapery?

    What, my 1860-O dime doesn't count? It's also R8 at grades above 55... :-)

    JonathonB-

You must post a scan of yours when it comes back. Then we can have a poll and decide which one wins image

I agree, that was quite the cherrypick as well.

Not a seated dime collector but I like the coin.

Can't wait to find out what the variety is.

I cheated and looked it up, so I won't say anything, but there's no way anyone will know this.

I don't know why, but as much as I like Seated Dimes, I've never gotten interested in collecting the varieties.

Beats me, and I can't look it up on your ebook website to cheat either.
I think I'll study it though and compare with my 1839 dimes.
My best dime cherrypick off ebay was an 1841-O closed buds small O.

A few people have identified the variety privately. Good work!

I will post the answer and explanation with late die state photos tonight.

Here is the answer to last night's variety question. First the cherrypicked 1839 dime with no die cracks that was posted last night.

This is an early die state.

    imageimage

During the middle die state, the obverse die shows a die crack starting at the rim and moving upward in between the 18 digits in the date and then through the right shield, Liberty's midsection and ending at her shoulder clasp.

    imageimage

This is the Pie Shaped Shattered Obverse die state. The die crack that originated from the rim, below 18 digits, fully bisects the obverse and exits to rim at Star 7. Another major die crack starts at rim by Star 13 and proceeds horizontally towards the center of the obverse, intersecting the vertical crack at the upper right point of the shield.

Thanks to all who took the time to take a guess at the variety. Some specialist on the message board correctly identified the 1839 Pie Shaped Shattered obverse early die state photos.

Collecting seated dime varieties can be a lot of fun, really it is the thrill of the hunt that makes it so exciting.......

Looks like the extremely rare 1853 variety with both dies rotated. Wow image

I wondered if it might have something to do with these two coins I was tracking in the Heritage auction. Not knowing anything about the varieties, I assumed they weren't all that expensive. They're both bid up to some serious money!

    Early State
    Late State

Added: Scratch that....They aren't bid up....Just some serious reserves.
    Easily distracted Type Collector

Yes, the $19,000+ reserve is very serious money for the F-105b. Can you believe that the same coin sold for $850 in 1990 at the Lovejoy Sale? It was bought by Brian Greer and later sold to Tim Cook. Prices for rare pieces are moving into the stratosphere. 5 digit coins are becoming common place these days.
