How can I tone a coin?

Im really envyous of everyone here with ranibow tones on their coins. I have a somewhat worthless Morgan I would like to make attractive.

I know, what I meant was, so you have a toned coin, that you made, to me it just doesn't have any value even to myself. It's his prerogative.

here's a simple method. take each of the morgans & dip the he11 out of 'em. put each one in a simple kraft-envelope, lay 'em on a sunny windowsill for the entire summer. that's all there is to it.

you can experiment, instead of the kraft envelopes, use newspaper, construction paper, toilet paper (unused preferably), whatever.

Reminds me of when we used to rub mercury on our quarters to brighten them up. We also used nick-a-date for our buffalos so we could see what year they were (it works on mint marks too). Unfortunately, those coins are now worthless.

My brother claim he's had good luck just putting coins in the window seal in the bright hot sun for a few months. It puzzles me on what many consider NT since they doctor the coin in various ways and this may come back to bite many in the future. In the not so distant past toned coins brought less and with everyone trying to do this to the coins to make more money those nice white one's will be in major demand in the future IMO.

The really wild colors can be made by placing the coin on a piece of purple velvet cloth. Then sandwich the coin and cloth between two pieces of glass and set in a sunny and humid location for several months. That's why I'll never buy a toned coin. They can be (and likely are) turned out by the dozens.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of toning. In some cases it is attractive, but ultimately it is still just oxidation. That being said TPN's link was fascinating reading, plus I hate getting a coin back that I think has nice NT, body bagged for AT.

To that end, some time ago I bought a roll of BU Franklin Halves and began my own experimenting so I could really teach myself what AT would look like. Most of the truly artificial and quick means are very easy to spot. But, if you take a piece of cardboard set it in your warm moist attic and drop a couple of coins on there, undisturbed for a couple months. You come out with some interesting results. This is what is truly scary to me about collecting a coin for the beauty of it's toning.

That being said... we collect coins for their beauty. If mcmxi wants to do it because he wants to keep it and thinks it's beautiful... who are we to say that's wrong.

Last, now that I've admitted to publicly messing with some half dollars. I want you to know what I did with them... they were all 1963-D's. I either dipped the hell out of them and disposed of them as bulk silver or sold them to friends as examples of AT, stating clearly that they were AT and what caused the toning, even the ones I thought could pass as NT.
