Update on: Does anyone know this Ebay seller? I apologize for my unfounded suspicions...

coinguy1coinguy1 Posts: 13,484 ✭✭✭
This seller has a number of high priced coins up for sale, each of which had a $1 starting price with no reserve . (Edited to add: The bidder's identities are being kept private too.)

His feedback appears to show that he has sold some (modern) issues in this price range. And, through a brief search, I was unable to find where his images came from, in the event that they were "borrowed" from another seller.

Still, this looks extremely suspicious to me. Does anyone here know (of) him? Thanks.

If I am able to determine that he is legitimate, I will gladly update this thread.

  • Dont know him, but his pics sux. Way too bright to really see the coins he is selling, if he even has the coins he says he has and that he's selling.

And heres a feedback from another Board member if that helps

EXCELLENT! Beautiful coins and a pleasure to deal with. Thanks!!! A+++++ Buyer dabigkahun ( 1771) Dec-10-02 10:17 802829440

Has good feedback and I recognize a few names, but only 60 transactions over the last three years. I would probably ask to use a third party to exchange the cash & coin to protect both parties. If he resists then that's all I need to know. Sometimes too much private bidding raises flags.

    Thanks guys.

Joe, I have no intention of bidding on any of those items, as I don't think that would be ethical of me, after questioning the legitimacy of his listings as I did. But, I wanted to see if people knew the seller in case there were a "problem" and Ebay needed to be notified.

He had a pattern listed a few weeks ago. I bid low, as it was private and there were other red flags. I was outbid by a lot, and felt sorry for the sucker who won.image

I've been watching this guy's auctions for a while. His listing style is identical to another seller with the handle Skytyr2 (Lloyd) who is legit and also sells pop top material. The copy of the style is so blatant, that I think it might also be Lloyd.

  • The 1881 S MS68PL dollar is a pop 1 coin, and according to the regisrty listing, it is in the #2 Amherst collection. Your suspicions seem well founded.

  • I'm sorry...that's a NGC coin, so never mind.

only reason I mention it is that I have seen his name in some other threads etc...but only in positive light...ie...people thanking him

I honestly don't know him... But there are red flags that would keep me away.

1.)Doesn't take PayPal. So, if it's a scam he's got my money and I can't do anything about it.
2.)Lists the Item location as being "Rareland" Could be China for all I know...
3.)Many of his previous auctions are private.
4.)Low feedback score to be selling such big time material.
5.)I don't recognize personally any of his previous buyers.
6.)Has only 11 feedbacks since 2003, yet now has 11 fairly expensive coins listed.
7.)Last but not least who auctions a $10,000 plus coin starting at $1.00 with No Reserve?

Maybe this is a hijacked account that has been mostly inactive for the last couple of years? Who really knows, but I'd be real careful...

Compare Rareland's auctions to this seller - Skytyr2.

I sent an eMail to Lloyd asking if he is also Rareland. I'll update when I hear back.

Never had a problem with Skytyr2

I also thought rareland looked suspicious. He even had a neg accusing him of keeping money & not sending coin a few days ago that is now gone. image

<< <i>He even had a neg accusing him of keeping money & not sending coin a few days ago that is now gone. >>

That neg was bogus. It was posted by a zero feedback bidder right after the auction ended.

  • I have done business with Azziplaw (a recent auction winner of this seller), more than once. He has left positve feedback for this user, so that is a pretty good indication to me, that he received what he paid for.

Having said that, I still only buy on Ebay, from sellers who accept Paypal. Unless it is a known dealer, who I have done business with before.

The auctions and the seller are legit:

<< <i>The coins sold under skytyr2 are coins of which I am the sole owner. The coins sold under rareland are coins being sold by our company EUL Coin Corp in which I am one of the principals Thank You, Lloyd >>

Based upon some of your replies, including the most recent one by Russ, it appears that my suspicions were unfounded, so I have edited my thread title accordingly.
