Are contemporary counterfeit Morgans in SILVER common?

MrEurekaMrEureka Posts: 24,419 ✭✭✭✭✭
Now that we know about the micro-O's, I wonder how many more contemporary counterfeits will emerge. After all, it's hard to believe that ALL silver contemporary counterfeits have a micro-O reverse. There could be millions of deceptive fakes out there!

Agreed. Its unlikely these would have ever come to light but for the onset of variety collecting and the sudden surge in the micro-O values over the past 6 months. It would take a big leap of faith to think the counterfeiters limited their production to a single reverse with a micro O. Seems like the P dates with their generally larger mintage and lack of mint marks would have made an inviting target for counterfeiters as well.

  • A lot of these are probably in junk silver piles or bags, since the play was on the price of silver, not a rare date or variety.

If common date 94% silver counterfeits are ID'd they might become more collectible (and hence more valuable) as countrefeits than as junk silver Morgans.

I guess most counterfeits are easy to identify. The Micro O's were a masterpiece in hindsight. Personally, I always wondered about the
1903 Micro S coins, however a BU specimen in MS62 turned up last year. Sold for 10K+ if I heard right.

Other ones? 1888-O VAM-4 Hot Lips has never been found above AU58 I think, but "looks" ok.

Isn't that what the mint sold with those GSA dollars? - got a few million from Asia, they should do it againimage

i do not agree. history has shown 19th century contemporay cf's by & large are pretty laughable.
