I finally figured out a critical mathematical equation regarding coin purchases.

BUY BIG COIN+BUY BIG COIN+BUY BIG COIN+BUY BIG COIN-(no selling)= YOU RUN OUT OF $$$$ !! image

and people keep saying, "bought anything good these days?"....NO..I am tapped....imageimage

Hey, it's OK. I'm tapped, too. Although I think we may have different "tapped" levels image

Laura hit upon this in a recent Legend market report. A lot of us smaller (read: non-billionaire) collectors being tapped out might be why the market has been sluggish of late.

For an important coin, I can still rally. For widgets? I have to pass.

I ain't bought nuthin in a while. Although I'm selling quite a bit while the market is at the current level. I'm down to 13 coins right now as my official collection not including two raw folders I don't keep up with and a couple of rolls of change.

I buy medium, it's a monetarily sound purchasing technique.

    Coin budget=Zero

Coin budget minus sell small coin minus sell small coin minus sell small coin (repeat as necessary)=Buy big coin image

I've occasionally sold some coins to buy new coins, and occasionally I've bought some not-so-big (i.e. $100-$200 max) coins recently. But we have some maintenance and upgrades for the house coming up, so much of our income above and beyond expenses are going toward preparing for those buys.

I went through my big tax refund pretty quick image I find some pleasure at times like this in the buy - sell routine, though -- low & mid budget coins that are NICE which I can enjoy owning for a little while & then pass along at net cost or a small profit (like, $.04 an hour on the time this takes). Now and then something acquired for that reason winds up grabbing me harder than I anticipated and becoming part of The Collection; sometimes this means something has to be kicked out, though.

Tapped at the moment, out of work for 4 months and just bought a house. Time to sell off some of the extras. I can still buy some mint stuff, but cannot hit over the $100 mark for a while. Unless I find a box of old bills in my back yard like those guys in Massachusetts.

As I see it, the coin market is overbought, over-hyped, and over extended, and prices have already met resistence levels in most areas and are probably headed lower. We are also entering the typical summer slowdown. Yet.....Heritage continues to send me 5 lb. boxes of their upcoming auction catalogs. I think a LOT of people also feel this market is way over extended and overpriced, hence the massive amount of auction lots being offered recently by Heritage and others. I've got a 3' tall stack of auction catalogs just in the past 4-5 months.......who the hell is buying all these coins??

My cannons have been pulled back into the ship hull also. But just not sure what I want these days.

I have two more big purchases on the horizon, but after that I am completely drained. I can do a cheapie here and there, but I pray that a big ticket must-buy coin doesn't show up -- I'd hate to miss an opportunity just because I got no cash image.

Flaminio---I know how you feel. When I have a few dollars I can't seem to find anything worth buying. When I'm broke all kinds of good deals come along. Or so it seems.

This sounds like a therapy group session rather than a mathematics class.image

For me, I am trying to continue my coin purchases but have indeed slowed down as I am a high value/high quality oriented buyer and the values have become harder to locate.

I have long anticipated the slowdown this summer. It will be a healthy respite for a market that has been a bit strong.

Despite this forecast. I still expect that the Cardinal collection of silver dollars will sell at record prices when ANR auctions them off in the last week of June 2005 in New York City.
