Is there ever going to be an article on modern day sports cards sets? I saw the article on the 54 Topps and Tom Candiotti's collection, which is nice, but it seems like the same old stuff.
How about the 1999 Bowman Chrome or the 1995 Bowman Best baseball sets. Or maybe do some research on the 1997 Bowman Gold Autographs and see how rare they really are. Does anyone realize the importance of the 2002-2005 Bowman Gold Refractors?? It doesn't seem like anyone writing the SMR cares at all about modern cards.
I think if Mr. Orlando used the SMR to talk more about the importance of newer sets, there would be alot more interest too.
It makes me sad that in the entire magazine, I can't see one single card pictured that is newer than a PSA 1986 Jordan Rookie. Is there anyone under the age of 50 besides me who even looks at this magazine?

Edited to add - I am 44 and if I ever get the urge to see information on modern sets, I go buy a Beckett.
I agree with Coachh on this one. A short while ago the football collectors on the board were complaining that there were no articles written about football cards. AllanAlan took input from various board members and wrote an article about the All-Time Great Football sets. Submitted to Joe Orlando and it was published in SMR.
It seems you have a passion for the Bowman Chrome set. Start a thread and get some info from some other collectors who care about the set. You'll soon have an article to submit.
PSA
23,813 entries
75.5%
BGS
5,899 entries
18.5 %
SGC
1,162 entries
3.5%
GAI
736 entires
2.5%
PSA has been around forever is that is partially the explanation for their dominating lead.
SGC has also been around for a long time but appears to be STAGNANT. It almost appear as if SGC is content with its own very very small niche market and clientele. They have a faithful following for older cards but as stated above, this can only carry a grading company so far. For modern cards, SGC is almsot nonexistent and definitely the WEAKEST of the big four.
The interesting comparison is BGS and GAI. These two companies have been around for approximately the same amount of time. GAI has who many consider to be the finest graders in the business. Yet GAI controls only 2.5 percent marketshare while Beckett has a SIGNIFICANT 18.5 percent. There is no grading company that is GROWING at the rate that Beckett is growing.
Vintage cards are great but from a business standpoint, who cares if you are grading a 1933 Goudey or a 1999 Bowman Chrome? Beckett doesn't and that's why they are growing at a rapid rate. Afterall it's the same ten dollars to grade a card.

<< <i>The article on the 1991 Topps Desert Shield cards was fantastic >>
Thanks (as he takes a bow). I will be signing autographs at Nationals, please have the article ready and $5 in hand.

Personally I hate Beckett grading, but I am amazed of their dominating lead over GAI and SGC. All of our debates over grading companies always revolve around SGC vs. PSA vs. GAI. Beckett is seldomly mentioned but they have a significant 18.5% of the market on ebay.

joelwalter, what's the story on the 1997 Bowman Gold autographs? I know they were supposed to be rare, but is there some debate about whether or not that's true? They don't seem to show up on ebay very often. The great players from that set sell pretty well in any color (blue, black, gold). What type of article do you want about 1999 Bowman Chrome? I like both the '97 Bowman autographs and the '99 Bowman Chrome. I didn't open a lot of packs, but I like the sets and would be interested in any information you have on the topic.

I just increased the value of your DS cards with the swoop of a pen. Do I get some free DS cards from you?
I can try as well.
