Where are the articles on modern sets in the SMR????

Is there ever going to be an article on modern day sports cards sets? I saw the article on the 54 Topps and Tom Candiotti's collection, which is nice, but it seems like the same old stuff.

How about the 1999 Bowman Chrome or the 1995 Bowman Best baseball sets. Or maybe do some research on the 1997 Bowman Gold Autographs and see how rare they really are. Does anyone realize the importance of the 2002-2005 Bowman Gold Refractors?? It doesn't seem like anyone writing the SMR cares at all about modern cards.
I think if Mr. Orlando used the SMR to talk more about the importance of newer sets, there would be alot more interest too.

It makes me sad that in the entire magazine, I can't see one single card pictured that is newer than a PSA 1986 Jordan Rookie. Is there anyone under the age of 50 besides me who even looks at this magazine?

  • Yes. I read it and i'm 30. I only collect 1930s goudeys. I would like to read about the best modern sets more, but I'm just more drawn to the history element in the pre-war cards. So either PSA is run by old geezers, and/or they are simply reflecting where the big money is. I do get a little tired of all the $$$$$$$$$$ and "screaming at me" dollar amounts though... anybody else?

  • If you really want to see some articles about new sets, try and write them yourselves. From what I have seen and heard, many if not most of the set articles were written by or at least started by collectors who are passionate about their sets.

Edited to add - I am 44 and if I ever get the urge to see information on modern sets, I go buy a Beckett.
  • I for one dont care if there are any modern articles in the SMR.
    I love candy cards
  • I have to agree with GG. It seems that the SMR seems to promote only cards of 20,000+ and collections of the same sort. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy seeing cards and collections of that nature, but most collections like that comprise only 1% of the collecting population. You arent allowed to collect for enjoyment anymore because price guides wont allow you to. I've always said I was going to start a price guide of old toasters or leaves and sit back and watch people start trying to sell them because "the GUIDE" says they are worth something. I dont think "the market" fluctuates that much where we need a guide coming out every month. When people start pulling out a Beckett or SMR from 10 years ago and see the prices are almost exactly the same, everyone will be in for a rude awakening......

I agree with Coachh on this one. A short while ago the football collectors on the board were complaining that there were no articles written about football cards. AllanAlan took input from various board members and wrote an article about the All-Time Great Football sets. Submitted to Joe Orlando and it was published in SMR.
It seems you have a passion for the Bowman Chrome set. Start a thread and get some info from some other collectors who care about the set. You'll soon have an article to submit.

PSA has lost a lot of marketshare to Beckett because they have ignore modern collectors. Vintage cards are great but there are limited quantities of unslabbed vintage. Modern cards, on the other hand, are abundant and still being produced. Beckett recognized this while PSA, SGC and GAI continue to fight over the limited quantity vintage cards.

We haven't done this in a while, but let's take a look at the marketshare as reflected by ebay.

    PSA
    23,813 entries
    75.5%

    BGS
    5,899 entries
    18.5 %

    SGC
    1,162 entries
    3.5%

    GAI
    736 entires
    2.5%

PSA has been around forever is that is partially the explanation for their dominating lead.

SGC has also been around for a long time but appears to be STAGNANT. It almost appear as if SGC is content with its own very very small niche market and clientele. They have a faithful following for older cards but as stated above, this can only carry a grading company so far. For modern cards, SGC is almsot nonexistent and definitely the WEAKEST of the big four.

The interesting comparison is BGS and GAI. These two companies have been around for approximately the same amount of time. GAI has who many consider to be the finest graders in the business. Yet GAI controls only 2.5 percent marketshare while Beckett has a SIGNIFICANT 18.5 percent. There is no grading company that is GROWING at the rate that Beckett is growing.

Vintage cards are great but from a business standpoint, who cares if you are grading a 1933 Goudey or a 1999 Bowman Chrome? Beckett doesn't and that's why they are growing at a rapid rate. Afterall it's the same ten dollars to grade a card.
  • Hmmm, interestin. I have only rec'd 1 issue of the SMR so far, so I can't make any opinions on that mag. But generally, I stopped reading price guides (Beckett, Tuff Stuff, etc...) a while back because there was too much focus on modern cards and players, and virtually no coverage of older stuff.

The article on the 1991 Topps Desert Shield cards was fantastic. Hopefully there will be more articles like that in the future.

Thanks for the stats, Koby - I am surprised BGS actually has that much market share...I don't see PSA losing their lead at all, especially with the Registry, and the huge head start in the marketplace. Beckett will always get the teen market, because that is who reads their magazine propoganda.

I agree that PSA is not going to lose their number one position for a very very long time.

Personally I hate Beckett grading, but I am amazed of their dominating lead over GAI and SGC. All of our debates over grading companies always revolve around SGC vs. PSA vs. GAI. Beckett is seldomly mentioned but they have a significant 18.5% of the market on ebay.

joelwalter, what's the story on the 1997 Bowman Gold autographs? I know they were supposed to be rare, but is there some debate about whether or not that's true? They don't seem to show up on ebay very often. The great players from that set sell pretty well in any color (blue, black, gold). What type of article do you want about 1999 Bowman Chrome? I like both the '97 Bowman autographs and the '99 Bowman Chrome. I didn't open a lot of packs, but I like the sets and would be interested in any information you have on the topic.
The beatings will continue until morale improves.

I just increased the value of your DS cards with the swoop of a pen. Do I get some free DS cards from you?

I can try as well. image
