Does anyone have a picture of a "thumbed" coin?

I've never seen a coin that I knew to be thumbed and I would like to see what the result of this type of surface alteration looks like. Thanks in advance if someone can put one up.

I think it would be exceedingly difficult to show this in a photo. It is difficult enough to detect "thumbed" coin in hand.

RYK, I'm assuming you have seen one before, in the absence of any pics can you explain what a silver coin looks like after this type of alteration.

Yep I did a search before I started this thread and I did read that one. The problem is nowhere in that or any other thread on this subject is there a clear discription of what a coin looks like after this has been done. I was hoping that one of the dealers here would have seen this before and or have one thay could show.

I can only talk about thumbed Morgans. The coin I have looks fine everywhere but Liberty's face. It's too shiny, no rubs or marks usually noticable on cheeks. Funny, it just looks wrong, not really greasy, maybe oily. It's hard to explain

Hmmm thats interesting Becky, can you post a pic of it? In reading the PCGS grading book my understanding is that tis process dulls the surface.

I have always hated this coin, threw it in an old coin envelope of my dad's. Haven't looked at it in a long time. It's toning, and I'm not sure you can see what I am describing, the coin looks fine, not her face, it's just too shiny...sorry I just don't have time to get a better pic..


A scan shows dull and lifeless...

A thumbed coin will sometimes have sort of a very light goldish tone on the area that was thumbed because of the oils on the hand. Sometimes it's obvious, sometimes it's not so much. It's basically just the smudging of a coin's surface to make the contact marks look less obvious.

I'll see if I can dig up a photo tomorrow.

See how the normal contact rubs show up in the fields, and how shiny and refective her face is? Does this help?

Thanks for the pic Becky, hard to tell for sure due to the toining but I'd agree that it looks off. Looks more like its been cleaned to me.

It's real close to looking cleaned. No hairlines though, just that shiny wrong look. It's reflective, the toning makes it's tougher to see. Straight on the coin is dull, maybe that is what you are reading, but tip it in the light and you have a bad mirror

OK that makes sense in a way. If you rub something metal I would expect it to get shinny. Hopefully Brandon can dig up another pic to compaire with yours. Thanks for you efforts Becky.
