1976 Topps racks..... What should I do?------ Broke one: results

I'm undecided on this one, so I figured I'd poll you guys to see what you think I should do. I got a great deal on two 1976 Topps baseball racks ($40 dlvd each) and I'm torn on whether I should bust them or sell them. If I bust them, the only cards I would keep (mint w/decent centering) would be the Eck, Brett, Yount, and Aaron and I would sell the rest. If I sell, I'm likely to get around $200-250 for the pair. i've never busted 76's because I always felt they were overpriced relative to the cards in the set, but since I got such a deal on these, I'm thinking I might give it a shot. Are they tougher than the other late 70s issues (say 78 or 79)?

Not worth opening. Sell the packs, buy a PSA 9 of as many of the players as you can with the sales.

    Sell them.

    P.S. I'll give you $41 + postage! image

I'd sell them. Who knows, but they may have come cheap because they were searched.

They're actually from a retired guy who's selling a large part of his collection over the phone, and he sounded legit over the phone. Searching with these is nearly impossible, unless one has the coallation codes Topps used in 76. The plastic is heavy and tighter than the 80s racks making thumbing very difficult. It was possible in the sets like 75 where the player's name was at the very bottom of the card, but even then you could only see about the bottom third of the name.

I am going through some 79 racks right now - and finding almost nothing worth grading. If the packs were moved around outside of the box, there is a good chance you will have some damaged cards anyway. Sell them - especially if you can find someone who would pay $100 a piece.

I would rip them. What is more fun? Making a decent profit on well purchased packs or ripping them to see what may be and you aren't out too much $. Lee, this goes against your track record image

  • If you keep buying and selling wax, you could parlay those profits into something awesome (61 Fleer basketball pack, an old cello pack, who knows).

Bust 'em, grade any of the All-Time All-Stars, then sell me any 8's you get image

Lee, '76 racks are much tougher than '78 or '79 and even quite a bit tougher than '77. I have one which I paid around $80 for 3 years ago . You got a great deal ! I'd eBay them and put the profits into something else.

Have some fun and bust open those babies! image
  • Bust them open or sell them to me. I just picked up a nice one a couple of weeks ago, and a bunch of 1975 mini packs as well unopened.

If you bust any of those packs and get dups, let me know, Im down to needing around 60 cards for my set!

    The 75 minis that is...........

Wow, "Sell em" took a huge lead out of the gate, but "Bust em" is catching on quite well. Yes, it does go against my character to be in possession of a pack and not open it, however, there are no cards in the 76 set I'm dying to have. I'm going to sell and buy something I'd enjoy a lot more I think.

  • If I bust some 75's I will let you know. I have a few raw laying around somewhere if you know what you need.

As far as the 1976 set I had one about 2/3's done in PSA 8/9, and the value of the set is not going to make you rich. If you were born between 1965 and 1972 you are like a lot of folks and like the set because you collected it as a kid. Unfortunately there are not a lot of high demand cards in the set since 1975 stole all of the rookies!

Bust them.....'76 trim jobs are running rampant right now and some nice graded copies would bring in the $$$$$$. Just make sure you choose the right grader that can spot trimmed cards.

I'd recommend selling the, but either way, bust something. If you don't like the 76 set, then sell the racks and put the money into some packs you'd prefer. I'd recommend buying a lone, expensive pack with the proceeds and then scanning in the cards so we can all play along at home.

    Have fun.

Decided to open one, sell one. I think I picked a good one, although I don't think the condition of the cards warrants me not opening the other.

    76-1

    76-2
    76-3

I'm having a hard time judging how PSA would grade these. I think the Brett (keeping) would get an 8, the Schmidt a 7 with a bad lower left corner, and I give the rest an outside shot at a 9. At least I got one card I want to keep. Couldn't be happier.

That Brett is GREAT! Congrats! Even though its just a bit off, you dont normally see them that well centered.
  • larryallen73larryallen73 Posts: 6,061 ✭✭✭
The Scmidt looks nice. Might it be a 9 or 10?
  • CDsNutsCDsNuts Posts: 10,092
Nah, 8 at best on the Schmidt. You can't see it on the scan but it's got a hit corner.

  • CD,

    Nice job Lee

I like how I was able to enlarge the pics through that site you had them listed on.
    Good for you.

balco, if the cards came out with razor sharp corners I'd consider ripping the other, but I just don't see it likely that I'd be getting $100 worth of cards out of it. Win, you can thank pandrews for his pixagogo.com recommendation. Only $5 a month.
