Ever have a "worthless" coin bring back fond memories?

I went to visit/help out my mother this last week (she lives outside of Las Vegas). She was recovering from pneumonia (3 weeks of being sick and didn't tell us so I was upset) and I spent the couple of days I was there trying to make things better.

One of the things I did was to clean out some of my old stuff from the garage that she, and my step-dad, before he died, hauled down there via truck from Washington State a few years back. When cleaning them out, I found some old coins. Most of them US....BUT (and this is why it is on this forum), I also found 1 foreign coin in the batch.

I found a Diez Pesos piece from 1976. Only one I have from Mexico. I went there back in high school (part of spanish class). It cost us a lot of money, but mom sacrificed so I could go.

Is the coin worth anything monetarily? Nope. Would I get rid of it? Nope!!!!

So, the coin now sits on my desk, above my keyboard, and is a reminder of 20 years ago for me (the trip was 20 years ago, not the coin's age), and is a reminder of the fun I had there.

Anyone else have any coins like that? From a different country that has no real value other than the memories?

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

TONS of my collection are special to me! All my U.S. Whitman folders which I started collecting as a kid with the help of my Grandparents hold that special meaning to me & remind me of them. The Aussie "Roo" Penny I found in one of my relative's junk box that started me on that branch of collecting always has held a special place in my heart as well. And the circulated Canadian coins in Whitman folders that started me along that path after several visits to Canada as a kid always bring back fond memories! All worth more than their collective weights in gold to me!!

  • I've got several, some pulled from circ, some given to me by relatives.

One coin stands out more than most and this is my George III penny (Grading Fair), i dunno but i just like the look of George III copper in such low grades. This coin though was one of my first coins (i didn't just get one when i started i got given a whole tin full by my father), the vast majority of them have been traded out and sold on in recent years, meaning i have fewer and fewer of my originals left, approximately two dozen or so. Many of those are Spanish coins of Franco, a 1953 Franklin half, a 1944 Washington Quarter (currently residing somewhere in a jar full of other quarters), a few other old British coins, but the penny was always my favourite by a mile because it was my oldest coin. Even more so since i sold my VF 1887 Shilling (i loved that coin!)

I suppose as i continually sell stuff on, i guess that the George III penny will probably end up being the sole survivor one day.

Here's a pic... (what you can see of it!) Funny how i kept the copper one though?

I have a few such sentimental coins. This one comes to mind. On a trip to Germany while in Jr. High School to visit my Granparents in the late 1960's, my Grandmother and I stopped by The Dredsner Bank where she purchased this coin for me; 1963 Luxemburg 250 Franc Commemorative. In my later teen years, I sold this coin along with most of my collection "for a few crumbs and a place to hide". Lately, everytime I come across one of these coins, I buy it. I currently have 7 of the 10,000 minted and will continue to buy everyone I come across just to say, "Thanks, Grandma.".
