GIVEAWAY!

Not really, but it gets you to read this!
In the US Coin Forum a thread is running about people (one in particular) who have multiple IDs and use for entering contests. It started off about selling items that were won in giveaways.
It is good reading for anyone who enters or offers the giveaways here on the boards.

<< <i>Yeah using 3 different ids to enter giveaways is blatant cheating, it ruins the spirit of the forums >>
I agree! I would hate to think I would need to do a background check to give a coin away.

I want to digress a moment and compliment the regular and sporadic contributors to this forum. They make this place very worthwhile and help me learn a great deal about numismatic areas I have never explored myself. They are kind and generous souls who educate young and mature aspiring numismatists such as me and many others. I also want to thank those who ask the questions, especially the YNs here. Many have those same questions you posted, but you actually posted them!!
That said, my pet peeve about giveaways is the "taker." What are some of the characteristics of a "taker?"
* Is an established forum member, but
* 90% or more of his coin forum (US and World) posts are for the purpose of entering giveaways.
* He provides little or no meaningful input to the good of the coin fora.
* He doesn't ask questions.
* He holds no giveaways of his own.
* Happily, there are truly few of them here, IMO
I salute my more magnanimous colleagues who overlook and treat all entries equally. Among the many faults I have to work on, one is that I am less noble than they. Those I have identified as "takers" can enter my giveaways all they like, but they will never win unless and until they contribute something of value to this forum.

Actually, I wasn't talking about you, but the thread brought up something related that had been bothering me for a long time.

Is that how they say it in North Carolina?
It sounds more like Brooklynese, though.

Thank you, I was just wondering.
For the sake of clarification, are you saying that you won a coin, gave it to your sister and she sold it on BST?

my sister won a coin(a Jefferson nickel) and I like it very much because it is in PCGS holder(I REALLY love pcgs holders), so I traded few common Canadian coins to her for her won coin.
Then, I listed the Jefferson nickel and almost my whole collection for sale on BST.
I am thinking to sell all those common coins and use the money to buy key dates.
By accidently or whatever, people think that I am cheating on these giveaways.
But the fact is not. it is a sad day for me.

I started collecting darkside 20 or so years ago when I was about 12. A friend of the family would travel quite a bit and would bring me a box of coins every few months. It was a rough time for me as my father has recently died, but looking forward to getting these coins every once in really gave me something to look forward to. I still have every single one on these coins as well as whitman penny and nickel collections that belonged to my father. These coins don't have a lot of dollar value but their value to me is priceless. I would never consider selling any of these coins. To this day I never have sold a coin, but I do try to continue the tradition by giving coins away to nieces and nephews.
If you are 18, how old is your sister (RYC)?
In the PMs to me, she seemed young and new to coins. She seemed excited by the coin.
I can already guess at a few of the answers to my questions below, but will ask them anyway.
The 1968s PR69 Jefferson wasn't worth enough to try to get a key date....why not let her keep it?
Did she really want to let it go? Or, did you, as the older? brother "coerce" her?
My first giveaway win was on this forum and was from SilverEagleCoins.
I still have it saved for my son. It isn't worth much $$$ but to me, it is a symbol of the people here. Helpful, friendly, and giving.
Sometimes, it is not all about money and how much you can get when you sell something....sometimes, it is about the bigger picture.
I harbor you no illwill. I was just very suprised that you posted it for sale within weeks of the receipt....and since yours, and her, names are so similar and the locations are the same, I knew it was the same coin.
If she really didn't want it, I wish she would have asked for the other choice (SAE) as that would have been easier for you to sell. I really did like the coin I sent her and hoped she liked it too.
Anyway, peace.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

<< <i>It doesn't seem right to turn around and sell them. Tacky was used and it's a good description. >>
Maybe ungrateful and unwise are good choices too. Sounds like the YN needs a little parental guidance and involvement as to the "hows/whys" of life in general and receiving gifts in particular.
My son, notlogical, enters frequently, (and wins frequently too ) but he absolutely treasures each and every coin, book, magazine, holder, flip, you name it that has been given him. But his Mom and I have been there, explaining the generosity behind it and guiding him in writing "thank you" notes. Kind of gives him "ownership" of the gift, thus making it more his...if that makes sense. Giveaways have offered him the chance to meet and become aquainted with some wonderful people in the hobby. And we try really hard to instill that kind of appreciation of things, both for things earned and for those given, into him. And I hope it shows. I know it has paid great dividends to him when how he literally lights up when he gets a "thank you" note for his "thank you" note.
Entering giveaways in order to turn them around to up-grade your collection is tacky, no matter the explination, but the tackiness seems to be a symptom of a deeper cause. Sounds like the kid needs a good mentor to help show him the ropes. hopefully this thread will ring a few bells with him too
Just my 2¢

Your son also asks some fine questions over here.

My sister is 14 and she is a beginner. She does like the nickel. However, as I said before, I am try to get rid of(sell) all my common coins from my collection. So I suggested to my sister that I can trade few old Canadian common coins for her nickel. And she said OK and is happy about it.
