<<Q: Do you offer a 100% money back guarantee that this coin is authentic?
Apr-25-05
A: I cannot guarantee that these coins are authentic I do not know anything about coins. I have never had them checked. Bid at your own risk.>>
Okay, I was given a heads up on the coin discussion. I never knew about a discussion board on ebay until now. This could be a good thing.
I truely do not know a thing about coins. Don't care a thing about coins, If I did care I would be trying to search what you all are searching. I don't know where to start searching.
I really did find these two coins at an estate auction located on the corner of Stayton Road and Jackson Lane in Charlotte, TN. Auctioned off by Woodard & Associates out of Dickson, TN. They were taped to the botton of a chest of drawer and when I loaded the dresser I removed the drawer to make it lighter to carry.
I have not been on ebay for a while because I did not have a telephone at my house because I was an OTR truck driver and was never home so I used a cell phone only.
I threw these coins on ebay for one reason, to get rid of them. If they are real great for the buyer bad for the seller but on the next note if they are not real bad for the buyer and great for the seller. I am not stopping this auction to have them certified, authenticated or whatever you all want to call it. If you do not want to bid then don't. Someone might want these just because they are so rare whether they are real or fake. I don't want to see anyone have to buy junk but I am not making anyone bid on these items. I gave you the best pictures that I could give and have emailed several to other ebayers.
I don't have a problem with anyone wanting to see the coins in person, you can meet me at a local bank in my area or at the local police station.
I am not a rich person I am a just getting by person and I have never intentionally tried to cheat or steal my way through life.

Is Bill Jones around? He'd probably be able to tell if these are legitimate.

The story Streeter found is a decent example of a too good to be true story, but occasionally those stories do happen. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean someone isn't following you.
What do you think it Grades? I don't even know enough to know how to grade these coins, I like VG10/12 details, but the reverse rims look gone and liberty is lower than 10? For $1225 (right now), if it's real, that would be one crazy RIP. Out of curiousity, anyone know bid/ask on a VG10 1796 half?
If it's real, I'll be bummed for a long time, the 1796-97 1/2 Dollar or Fifty Cents is a nightmare coin for my type set that I won't get to for decades probably.
Need more $$$ for coins?
SMOEONE has to get to CHARLOTTE, TENNESSEE and inspect it.
Any NASHVILLE DEALERS out there?
We need some Overton gurus, stat!! OKBustchaser? JrGRMan??
On the other hand...nobody in their right mind would offer to allow people to inspect it in person if they KNEW it was counterfeit.
At any rate, couldn't you just buy it with a credit card and do a chargeback if it turns out to be a counterfeit? Not advocating that, btw, just a thought.
Bust dime
Bust half
but I am certain the half dollar is not genuine.
Genuine coin:
Comparing to the piece in question, on the obverse, her profile looks funny, the brow slopes a little too much. The 6 in the date is too high, in fact the whole date looks way too high, and also the position of star 1 is too high, the lower right point should point to the lowest curl. The lower right pont of star 8 should ppoint below the left serif of the L in LIBERTY. There are many other discrepancies.
On the reverse, the mouth of the eagle and his wings look funny to me. Star 9 points way too low on the Y, the lowere left point should point to just below the branch of the Y, at the stalk, not at the lower right serif as on this specimen. The stems of the berries appear much too thick, and the berries themselves too large. Quoting from Overton: "... a palm leaf is close to lower left serif of second T in STATES but does not touch.".. in fact most of the relationships among the leaves and letters are wrong. Look at the gap between the tips of the uppermost laurel and palm leaves, and the relationship of that gap to the letter E.
Could very well be a GM replica, expertly worn down and artificially toned.

<< <i>Hmmm...
Could the half be a Gallery Mint repro ... the copy stamp would have been beneath the eagle's talons. Just wondering as they did a repro 1796 mint set ... have a few coins out of the set.

Where does it say the coin could be inspected at a bank? If someone was REALLY interested, I could contact the seller.
Diagnostics include the lower curls of the hair (unless some serious retooling was done) and the date on the obverse, and berry position on the wreath of the reverse (this being an obvious one). Comparison to genuine specimens will reveal significant differences.
Nothing on the dime screams fake, but I am not that familiar with that series. Comparison to online images would suggest it may be genuine or at least a cast counterfiet from a real coin.
