Strange happening on this 1884-O Morgan

Aside from the die cracks around the reverse, can someone identify these other going ons in the reverse? Thanks.

Edit to add: First one is around the top end of the leaf on the wreath. Second is around the 'o' in dollar.

Die clash by the top of the wreath. Looks like a small lamination by the MM.

Yep, die clash. I have some Morgans with almost identical clash marks on the reverse.

Very nice and strong die clash. You should check the obverse for clashed reverse letters, such as the n in In and the ust in Trust.

Since the O in DOLLAR is complete, as well as the small portion of the wreath, or apparently complete by the picture, I would suggest the planchet was flawed and then struck by the die.

I also noticed doubling of the star after dollar as well....

  • Another question I have... Should this coin bring a premium?

IMO...no. It's an interesting example of two different as-struck anomalies, though, and one I'd keep and enjoy for that reason.

I am just curious how it can have 2 different anomalies on the same strike.

Nice coin, but clashes are very common. If however, you can see an E on the reverse, or an s, st, or n on the obverse, it will bring a small premium. I don't see the E on the reverse, do you have a nice large pic of the obverse you can share?

The missing metal looks like a strike through to me, very cool, may bring a small premium from the error guys. Nice pics, thanks for sharing themimage

The strike through is a planchet problem, or junk on the die. The clashing is a die problem, both are unrelated. A clashed die means there was no planchet in the dies and they struck each other, causing damage to the dies.

Do you have a pic of the front(obverse)? I need closeups of the v of her hair and the front of her neck to look for the st, and n's. They will be just tiny little bumps there.

You have a bunch of cool things on this coin. There is a nice little die break across the wreath, all the way to the MM, then over to the N in one, the top of the coin too. The die has been overpolished, look at the wreath across from the U in united, the whole bottom of the leaf is gone. I think see a line in the MM, could be an O/O. Very fun coinimage

  • Wow! I didn't even see the missing leaf.. Nice Catch... I will go take a digital pic of the Obverse for you and edit this post and add it....

Nice hard clash!! Look at the area behind her cap....this pic will help you to see how the clash effects the dies....

Go check out Ashmore there are all the updates for the VAMs there, it will give you a better idea of what you are looking for. The pics have to be really closeup to see the clashed letters, looks like you might have something there.image

  • Take a look at the original photo. There almost appears to be some lettering in the scratchy area next to the wreath. Looks like a letter "T" and another letter next to it.

Clashed dies are the next generation of collectible VAMs and a whole new book is coming out on them.

It almost appears like Liberty's lips are doubled as well...are they?

If it were my coin, it would be a keeper!!image

If I only had a dollar for every VAM I have...err...nevermind...I do!! image

If you have an "E" reverse, it's a great coin. Look for the E under the first two tail feathers. I see some clashing, but the E is not distinct in your picture. Look at it under a loupe.

The more I look at this coin the more I find on it..

Yes the lips have some doubling as well as the clash mark in her hair above her ear..

If you find that you have an "E" reverse, you may have the first. I don't recall 84-O as having a known E reverse.

I think what you are seeing on the obverse is part of the clash on her lips. Cool coin.
