    So where are we on these coins? Are they an actual variety or just a metal error? I still have not read any official Mint explanation.

    As far as I know the mint said they are checking into it..... Same answer for quite a while now. Coin magazines I have read say that the mint now destroys dies after use so I don't know how they will ever find out unless someone comes forward and confesses to deliberate tampering or has some knowledge of the error. Who knows?
