Any thing of numismatic interest in Mexico City?

I need to go to Mexico City in a few weeks. Is there anything of numismatic interest there?

I don't know about Mexico City, but last week I visited Tijuana in search of coins. There were lots of fakes to be had and the couple of coins that looked real to me were polished up very nicely image. I'll be interested to hear about your experience. Good luck!
I've had great transactions with people like: drwstr123, CCC2010, AlanLastufka, Type2, Justlooking, zas107, StrikeOutXXX, 10point, 66Tbird, and many more!

The old mint is (appropriately) on Moneda Street, near the cathedral and central square. It now houses an unimpressive cultural museum with nothing numismatic in sight, except for a valuable piece of odd and curious money (an Eskimo copper shield) that has been literally screwed into the wall.

The Anthropology Museum in Mexico City is world famous and a must see. There is some material that is collected by odd and curious money collectors on display, but no coins, medals, etc.

The Banco de Mexico does have a collection, but I believe it is by appointment only.

  • This won't help in Mexico...but it might help other world travelers.

If you travel overseas, bring some of your state quarters or other US issues for trade...I even throw a US coin on the table as an addition to the tip.

Go to http://www.geocities.com/svitaly2002/ForTourist.html for a pretty good list of international coin shops.

If you have any additions to his list, I recommend e-mailing him at svitaly2002@mail.ru

Adios and have a good trip.
