Someone help me with these PRO graded auctions please . . .

OK, this gentleman is always selling PRO graded cards:

PRO Koufax

His feedback is private, as are his auctions. However, his rating is 99.8% with over 3300 positives.

So what's the deal? Are every single one of these PRO graded cards trimmed? I mean, the Koufax looks sweet for a 7.5. I was just curious. Someone's buying these things, and they all appear to be happy buyers. Are there really people out there spending decent money for vintage cards that don't know PRO's reputation, or are all of the buyers cracking them out and selling them at their local shows? I don't get it.

    Yes. Every one of 'em.

Well, perhaps not 100%, but close. Cards end up at PRO for one of two reasons:

    1) They're already trimmed and one or more of PSA / SGC / GAI has already rejected them.
    2) Somebody bought them raw or already graded with the plan of slicing 'em up to send to PRO for a high grade.

A PRO card is forever wandering from owner to owner, like the mythical Flying Dutchman. After the first sale, presumably by the person who trimmed it, each buyer discovers he's been screwed and promptly puts it up on eBay to recover some of his loss.

Sometimes, he discovers the screwing when he cracks it out and sends to PSA. After a moment of feeling like image he thinks "OK, now what? Hmm, send it back to PRO, then sell it!"

And so the world turns .....

GoBravesGo, that does make me very sick! All those PRO 7.5's and 8's were once perfectly respectable PSA 5's and 6's.

Is the seller, t2inc, who I think it is? He of the famous Nip-Tuck Surgery for Sports Cards?

The saddest thing of all is how many great cards that are ruined forever!

This is because the newbie suckers who buy these cards don't find out for awhile that the "expensive" card they purchased is technically worthless. Some probably still don't know. If these buyers could give their feedback after learning the truth about Pro-Grading, this sellers feedback rating would be 0% and his positives would also be 0.

Wow - sick, indeed. You would like to think more people know what is going on there, but sadly - there are always newbies to the game getting taken advantage of. Too bad it can't be stopped.

  • How many of these cards do you think psa would grade?
    I love candy cards
  • I have sent that worthless piece of dog droppings many e-mails regarding his 'cut-jobs.' Never responded to any of them. I just hate to see vintage cards being trimmed and slabbed so he can continue to reap the rewards.

All sales of graded cards (BGS, PSA, PRO, GAI, & SGC) are final

That's the part that is a killer IMO. And the card can be trimmed and still make the size requirement in some instances - in that case PSA, e.g., will still reject the card and someone is out the cost of the card and grading fee.

And it can happen when you least expect it Jake
In 1992, I bought a T3 HOF'er from Greg B. of the old Superior before it went big. I did not think of measuring it since the corners weren't razor sharp. I just got it back from PSA and it was rejected as "evidence of trimming" - now that's a kick in the ass! That makes me look like a real jerk! Now, they could be wrong and the card is just undersized but hard to say.

Does anyone know for sure how PSA checks for trimming? Many people believe it's a "size" thing. I've also heard it has little to do with size, but that the graders can tell by the edges (under magnification) that the card is not factory cut.

Also, with regards to the trimmed PRO cards, I'm amazed that trimming them is all that is needed to put them in the "near mint" category. In other words, if a card has edge / corner issues, it seems like it would have creases / surfaces issues as well.

Doesn't matter - you're comparing apples and oranges. Pro-Grading has little consistency whatsoever with anything - they are a sham outfit.
