Pricing on a 1996-W olympic Cauldron 5$Gold canceled Die??

It's an obverse die canceled only by a thin X , all other details show. Comes with the US Mint paper work and is pristine. The US Mint certificate stated only 60 made. I would like to make an offer what is a fair price?

They go for about $600 if I recall correctly. You should be able to do a search on the Forum as they have been discussed before

Those don't come around often. I remember seeing some old double eagle dies defaced in a similar manner go for around $800 or so. I'd say this is cool but probably won't bring that much. I'll throw a random guess: $300. In any case, I'd love it in my collection.

At the last ANA convention in Baltimore (2003) I bought this same die in Proof for $950 from Fred Weinberg who is a major error dealer who also carries old mint dies from time to time. A lot of these dies are sold on e-bay so a search there may give you more recient price info.

I have a cancelled 95 Olympic Silver dollar commemorative reverse die. I paid about $500 for it a year ago on eBay (probably too much, but it's a cool item). I've never seen a commemorative gold coin die.

Since the mint used a common reverse die for four different obverse dies on 1995 and 1996, the reverse dies are the most common types. I have seen them bring between $600 and $750 so you did well getting your for $500. I think they are neat. Unlike the ones they are selling now 95% of the design is still visible on the face of the die.

I had been trying to put a set of these dies together for years - they don't come up for sale that often. Fred Weinberg has sold several on Ebay in the past.

Typical prices are in excess of $600 each - some have gone much higher.

I'll buy them all day for less than $500.

I have a high jump die on ebay right now for $599 including a PCGS 69dcam dollar.
