Found a War Nickel in my change today.

I seem to be getting lucky when it comes to circulation finds lately. In the last two months i have received 5-6 wheat pennies in change(40's), a bunch of 1964 nickels, a couple Silver Washingtons (coinstar) and my first war nickel.

5-6 of the coins have come from the Tool Department of my local Sears. Seems someones cashing in their old coins there as i always get older coins back from my change. Today was no different.

Pulled a 58-D and a 44-P from my change today! Seems everytime i look down at my hand after buying something there i'm finding a pre-1964 coin of some type!

Cool. I posted the 1954 quarter I found in change on Friday. I don't seem to find to many war nickels, though. But why save the 1964 nickels? The 64-d has the largest mintage in the entire series.

I don't really know why i save them, but i do. I guess even though it's so common, it's still the older design with the mint-mark on the reverse. I keep them in a little jar, nothing fancy. I have about 7-8 64-D's.

I put some of the better quality circ. coins I find in 2x2 cardboard holders. I have a 1917 Buffalo Nickel i found two years ago in circulation. I have a 44-D wheatie that has very little wear. The 44-P will probably find it's way to a 2x2 holder too.

They may be common date circ coins that are not worth much, but it's still pretty cool to find them in circulation and i like to hang on to them.

I've had the same experience. Over the last several months I've gotten older stuff too. Just last night I got a 57-D Wheatie & a 64-D nickel in the same change from Dunkin Donuts.
I wonder why all of a sudden all this stuff is out there? image

Pretty neat. I have never gotten one in change but I know some who have. Always brings a smile!

I got a 1950 dime the other day. My wife's best friend was in town and I didn't notice the silver until the end of the day. Normally my change is attributed on the spot.

Not once have I ever found a war nickel in circulation. I've probably found 10 dated 1939, and 20+ dated 1940, but never a war nickel.

Nice! It's been eons since I got a war nickel in change.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • I had lunch at Hardee's a while back; looked at my change that night and found four 1946-D Lincolns, all in very nice circulated condition. I figure someone paid with a roll. Wish I had looked earlier; I'd have asked them for all my change in pennies!

Yes there have been a rash of old coins popping up in circulation lately. I've been finding wheat cents and war nickels and even a Merc dime no long ago. It appears that when there is a large lay off of people from a buisness in an area, the old coins come out of a jar or can for food and stuff. We've had quite a few of those in this area lately and the old coins are turning up.

  • It's been awhile, but I did find one in a roll awhile back. Pretty fun.

    Congrats on your kewl finds.
