My newest obsession

I've been becoming more and more fascinated with the Burger King cards from the late 70's. I figured I would share my new obsession to see if I find out anything new from fellow collectors. Here are some of the reason's I like them:

-Sets are only 20 or 30 cards making it easier to complete in graded form
-There weren't as many printed as the regular issue cards
-The Trammell rookie is friggin cool, they should have made his regular Topps card look like that
-All the sets have stars and HOF's in them (especially the 1980 Pitch, Hit, & Run set)
-They seem very tough to find in high grade, making it a challenge

I think I'm gonna try to dive in to all of the sets in graded form. Here's the one's I know of:

1977 Yankess
1978 Yankees
1978 Tigers
1979 Yankees
1979 Phillies
1980 Phillies
1980 Pitch, Hit, & Run

Does anybody know of any others from this time period?

I just won a lot of 10 unopened packs of the Pitch, Hit, & Run for next to nothing on EBay. I bid much higher than the $6 I won them for. Maybe I overbid, but I really wanted them. I've opened some 1978 Yankees packs in the past but nothing seemed like PSA 9 material. That only fueled my resolve to tackle the challenge.

Has anybody else had much success grading these from packs?

Didn't know - don't think there is a 77 Tigers set. I've got the 78 Tigers set listed on the registry already. Give me a shout it you want to shoot the breeze.

I agree with you that the Tram is one of his best looking cards. I own or have owned the majority of the graded 8's I think. Jim has the 9 if I recall. A 10 would be quite the Holy Grail. Nice cards from the tigers set are not as easy to find as regular 78s - obviously - due to the distribution method.

I'm always looking to upgrade - if anyone out there has some cards I need, drop me a line. Wabbitt if you happen across the mother load of Tiger cards, let me know about your scraps.

Technically there is a 1977 Burger King Tigers set but it differs so much from the other Burger King sets that it's easy to ignore it. Burger King issued a "set" of 4 8x10 photos of Tiger players (one per week) in the Detroit area. Players are Fidrych, LeFlore, Rozema, and Stanley. Photos book at about $5 each.

The 77 Burger King Tigers aren't normally recognized as part of this series of cards. I look for any excuse to post this Tram. It's the only 9, and I submitted it myself:

By the way, You're right, they're very hard to find centered, and there are a lot of corner issues due to only four cards in a pack (including the checklist) wrapped in tight cellophane. Printing issues abound as well. I'll post some other graded Tigers later.

Jim - that is a sweet card, and I agree that it would have been great if that was his actual 1978 Topps RC. I have always wanted one of those for my collection, just because of its scarcity. Thanks for the scan, again!

Thanks Jester and ctsoxfan. I bought a box of BK Tigers off ebay about a year ago trying to get a 9 Tram and got lucky. I sent in my best copy of every card from the set. Grdes ranged from 6 to 9 with a couple of OC's. This is one hard set. An all 9 would be an amazing feat.
