What a great error! Why on earth was NGC so tough on it? It looks far better than 62.

  • It's got a very small graze mark just below the buff's "appendage" and an even smaller one at the hip that you have to look real hard to even see. But, nothing to warrant this kind of grade. The obverse is a 65 and the reverse should be no worse than 64 IMO. Though I think this should be in a 64 holder, it really doesn't matter that much to me or I would have had it reviewed. Whether 62 or 64/65, the important thing here is the error itself. That is, it's a beautiful example of a very rare error that happens to have great eye appeal. So, to me the technical grade number on the holder is less relevant on this coin, than it would be for more frequently offered coins (eg. any of the regular buffalo keys where I think 62 vs. 64/65 means alot more differential in value). I mean, it's doubtful anyone will be putting together a MS grading set of 1916 Broadstuck with Clip Buffalos, whereas this is surely a possibility for every regular issue date in the series.

I agree. It's nice when errors come in mint state, but the error makes up 95% of the interest factor.

Sure wish I could afford to add it to my Buffalo collection.

  • Wow! Here's a PCGS 65??? 1920 5% O/C that wen't for really strong money, $1150 before juice, at Teletrade last night. I'm partial of course, but I like my coin better. 1920 O/C's are one of the more "common" of the major buffalo errors.
