Digital Camera Recomendation

I am looking to buy a digital camera. The two that I have in mind are the Cannon Powershot A510 and the Nikon Coolpix 4600. It will mostly be used for standard photography and I assume most cameras do a sufficient job at that. I was wondering if anyone has used either of these cameras for photographing coins and if so what are your thoughts. Both cameras have a macro mode and are around $200. If you have used any other cameras in this price range please let me know.

Thanks

I have three Nikons (and one old Ricoh). The Nikons are great - you won't be disappointed.

Canon always ends up on top in any comparison. Do your searches.

Only in slanted comparisons. Nikon is best.
  • If you're limiting yourself to Nikon & Canon, go with the Nikon.
If you're open to other suggestions, and if you want the best
picture quality and the best macro for coins, go with an Olympus.

K6AZ, you think that obverse end-roller was bag toned first? The center area by liberty gives me the impression due to the colors and pattern.

    3 Words.... Canon, Canon, Canon.
They are worlds ahead of the others in digital technology, and their customer service is second to none. I'm a professional, and that's all I use for my business now. Btw, I use to be a Hasselblad and Nikon guy.

skingspan...you stated it would be used mostly for standard photography......

you mean for pics of family, kids, etc.???? I found myself in that position last year and bought an Oly 5060 and LOVE It. I get prints back from shutterfly of my kids, etc..that look unreal in quality.

The camera will probably be used mostly for pics of family, vacations, etc.....I assume all 3-4 megapixel $200 cameras do a fine job at this. I also plan to use it to photograph my coins so I am looking for a model that also has a good macro mode. I have read the review on all of comparison sites but most of them don't really get into the macro mode. That is why I asked the question here. I searched the archives and there seem to be quite a bit of posts about nikons cameras, although none about the coolpix 4600.

I'm currently looking at a Canon 20D. Would that be a good choice? And if so, which lens would you recommend for photographing coins?
    When in doubt, don't.
  • I'm looking real seriously at a Nikon Coolpix 4800.
