Grades in: Consistency and not
For my coin of the prime number quarter I had to send in my 1901 Morgan in PCGS AU 58. It has excellent luster for a 1901, but it does have numerous minor marks, particularly on the cheek. So, it comes back:
1 21947093 1901 S$1 USA AU58
PCGS Consistency: +1. For me, this is good. Most of my "free" coins of the quarter have come back in body bags (I typically send in very old coins that I've had for 20 years).
I also had freebies for 90% completion of one of my proof Jefferson sets. I have been looking for a nice 1957 cameo for a long time(I've purchased and returned two PCGS PR67 Cams) so I thought I'd make another attempt. I had a 1941, no trace of frost that I felt was 66+. I included it to remind the grader what a non-cameo looked like.
1 21948229 1941 5C USA PR65
Not an auspicious begininng.
I had two 1957s that I felt were cameos (both are nicer than the two 67cams I have purchased and returned). The first began slabbed life as a PCI PR70 UltraCam! I thought it would be a PR66 cam or PR67 Cam. However the first time I sent it to PCGS, they graded it PR67 no cam! I was surprised and disappointed. It went in again:
2 21948230 1957 5C USA PR66CA
Not thrilling, but probably the correct grade. PCGS consistency: -1
Next I had a 1957 ICG PR68 Cam. I felt it was a 67 Cam, and
2 21948231 1957 5C USA PR67CA
PCGS agreed!
It will replace the PR68 no cam in my registry set.
Finally, I had a very nice ICG PR69 DCam (deep mirrors with nice frost for a 1958). I thought t was a 67 Cam with a shot at DCam, but
3 21948232 1958 5C USA PR66CA
Oh well.
I guess I need to look at some more 1958s.
All and all, not bad. Most importantly, I now have a nice 1957 Cam.
