And he puts a telephone number in his feedback. Apparently you can call anytime.
Just in the last year, I can think of the Wedding dress guy, the Virgin Mary Grilled Cheese, and the guy auctioning off his forehead as an advertisement all did really well.
With a business/marketing background, my guess is, it's a combination of the newness factor, timing, humor, the opening bid, viral marketing tactics (everyone passes it along to everyone else) and a good dose of luck.
