Bitter words between Ozzie, Maggs

DETROIT -- Two of Venezuela's biggest names staged a heavyweight war of words Thursday that is sure to dash any hopes they ever would become friends.

In one corner, new Detroit Tigers outfielder Magglio Ordonez said he has an enemy in White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen and said he never would accept an apology from his former skipper. In the opposite corner, Guillen laughed off the notion that he needed to apologize for anything and said Ordonez has messed with the wrong guy.

''I don't consider him my friend,'' Ordonez said before the Sox-Tigers game. ''I have nothing to say to him. I don't want to see him, I don't want to talk to him. He's my enemy. Even if he came to me and tried to apologize to me, I won't accept it.''

Guillen fired back a big adios and went into a tirade that put his spring-training blowup on Ordonez to shame.

''He's playing with fire,'' Guillen said. ''I'm not afraid of him. I have nothing to apologize to him for. I have nothing to do with Magglio wearing the Detroit Tigers uniform. Every time he played for me, he played good, but if he thinks I'm his enemy or I have something against him, that's up to him.''

Pick a side, as the sporting faithful of Venezuela are sure to do today. Guillen is confident his view will be more respected.

The two had an icy relationship last season, Guillen's first as the Sox' manager, and it was apparent well before Ordonez injured his knee. Guillen seemed to laugh and joke with everybody, but he and Ordonez kept their distance.

In mid-May, after an outfield collision with teammate Willie Harris, Ordonez's health quickly went south, and that extended into the offseason when his Sox contract expired. Ordonez had two knee surgeries last year and an experimental treatment in Austria for bone marrow edema.

This spring, while still trying to rehabilitate his knee, Ordonez complained of stomach pain that turned out to be a viral infection. When the season began, he started experiencing pain in his pelvic area. Tests for a hernia have been inconclusive, and a bone scan was scheduled for Thursday to check for other problems.

It has been a tough time for Ordonez as speculation has centered around the possibility his career might be in jeopardy. When Guillen told the Sun-Times this spring that Ordonez was lying about his offseason contract negotiations with the Sox, the outfielder felt his countryman was piling on.

''I'm not a guy who ever talks bad about anybody,'' Ordonez said. ''I mean, [I say] nothing, and you guys know. And I don't talk bad about people when people are hurt or they are down. I'm very straightforward. There are a lot of people who try to push it down and do the opposite.''

Even if he wouldn't accept an apology from Guillen, it seemed obvious that Ordonez wanted him to feel some type of remorse. That isn't likely to happen.

''Magglio is full of [bleep],'' Guillen said. ''Apologize to who? I don't have to apologize to anybody because, first of all, he's the first one to name me. He said I was pushing him to play [last season], and I was responsible. Don't make me feel like I was the bad guy in this.''

Guillen wondered why he never felt any gratitude from Ordonez nearly a decade ago, when Guillen stuck up for the young minor-leaguer by saying the Sox were holding him back. The incident ended Guillen's strong relationship with general manager Ron Schueler, but it failed to forge a bond between Guillen and Ordonez.

''He never was my friend because I don't know him,'' Guillen said. ''If he thinks what I said hurt him, I don't give a [bleep]. I didn't come here to make friends, I came here to win games. I've got a lot of friends. If Magglio doesn't want to be my friend, I'm not going to lose sleep at night.''

Guillen only was warming up, though. He saved his best for last, launching into an expletive-laced torrent of insults.

''He's a piece of [bleep],'' Guillen said. ''He's another Venezuelan [bleep]. [Bleep] him. He thinks he's got an enemy? No, he's got a big one. He knows I can [bleep] him over in a lot of different ways.

''He better shut the [bleep] up and just play for the Detroit Tigers. Why do I have to go over and even apologize to him? Who the [bleep] is Magglio Ordonez? What did he ever do for me? He didn't do [bleep] for me. But he said I'm his enemy -- he knows me. Tell him he knows me, and he can take it how he wants to take it.

''Did he play good for me? Yes, he did. Did he play hard for me? Yes, he did. He might like me. He might be sensitive of me. He might be jealous of me, I don't know why. But saying I'm his enemy, he hates me, I could care less what that [bleep] thinks. I don't give a [bleep] what he does with the rest of his life. He [bleep] with the wrong guy, and he knows that, too. He knows for a fact that he [bleep] with the wrong people.''
