My 66T Palmer RC - I'ld Like to Burn It! America's Ambassador of Baseball!

This is my favorite card in my 66T raw set I've been working on and a solid exmt-nrmt card.

image

I don't know if anyone was watching ESPN last nite or this AM but they did a chronolog of 2 nice guys who are neo-National fans and ex-Baltimore's - they went to a game in DC and then drove 35 miles up to Baltimore for a visit to Camden Yards. One of the guys was very excited - especially with the prospect of actually seeing a national and american league game in the same day!

Enter Palmer - when interviewed about the event - Palmer: "I think the guys need to get a life" The interviewer: "too much baseball" Palmer: he kind of smiles - I think he nodded and then said something to the effect: "If I weren't being paid, I wouldn't be here"

WTF!!! He's telling the world that people who are excited about baseball and willing to attend two games in a day are without personality?! So, he wouldn't attend a game if he wasn't paid? So, is baseball not worth it? Palmer needs to be spanked by the Orioles organization AND Major League Baseball!!!!

What do you guys think?
I rarely get annoyed at what these guys say but this guy is out of touch! HOF'er - used to make a living on TV selling his name connected products like "fruit" of the loom.
Very disappointing

  • Wow, this is really disappointing to hear. I've always liked Palmer. He's one of the best in person signers out there, and to hear that this is his attitude toward fans? Laaaame.

Palmer's a tool. That's why O's fans never really connected with him as far as collecting goes compared to Brooks, Frank, Cal, and Eddie. He's by far the best pitcher ever in our organization, but has always fallen short as a personality and commentator, which is why not many people collect him or covet his auto. Also the reason he never really got the credit in the national press for all his great seasons. Hell, even Mussina had more fans before he turned to the darkside. Compared to other pitchers of his calliber during that era, Seaver, Carlton, Gibson, etc... have always had twice as much fanfare as Palmer.

Ummm...you're thinkin of Tim McCarver. I guess that kinda sounds like Jim Palmer.

And it was two buckets of ice water, not champagne.

    And Deion's an ass.

But other than that, you're right on. image

Who did Deion win the series with? Talk about guys who don't deserve a ring. That said, I'm happy to have him as a Nickelback for $1 million getting 3 picks a year. Go Ravens!

BTW, the interview was edited so that they may have "harpooned" Palmer and kind of set him up with the response he gave.

Just thought I'ld say that. I'm going to watch ESPN this afternoon to see if any comments are made.

  • He would have been delighted if people went out of their way to see him play. Just another bitter retired player.

Har, Palmer's always been a tool. Anyone remember that one time he told a reporter he wasn't pitching very well because his hair hurt?
  • Jim Palmer was very nice to me...I met him at a minor league game...he signed 5 or 6 things no questions asked, posed for pictures, and even added notations to the signatures. I have no complaints about him.

Hey Mike, remember another great line from Bull Durham:

"You don't respect yourself, and that's your problem. But you don't respect the game, and that's my problem."

I get irritated with these guys who have been given such a cushy life and have gotten rich, then find the game that gave them that life so mundane. It takes a pretty big chunk out of the average guy's budget to take the wife and three kids out to the ballpark so that grown men can live something that everybody else can only dream about. I don't think it's too much to ask to show some respect for the game. You're right on. Don't burn the card, though. You'll regret it in the morning.

    Oddball
My response on Palmer is based on the TV presentation - that's why I later put in the plug that he may have been "coaxed" to act that way.
I have had mixed reviews on Palmer - glad to hear you were treated well - which means he isn't totally one way - like some other people who never sign.

    Thanx for sharing

You can't argue with his pitching credentials, but Palmer has always been an irritating self important pompous arse. That's why Earl Weaver constantly wanted to get him in a headlock. Julen - I know what you're referring to, and am sure Weaver and some of his teammates would have loved to replace Roseboro's head with his, but he was the ace of the staff and they wanted to win games.

I've lived in the Balto area for about 15 years and can't stand listening to his second guessing babble on O's games. Three years ago, my family went to a festival in Balto's Little Italy.....Palmer and Chuck Thompson were the guest celebrities. My then 10 year old daughter goes up to Palmer and asks him for a personalized auto. He spells her name wrong. She hands him another scrap of paper and asks if he would be kind enough to do it again. He refuses. One per customer. And nobody was else was even near him at the time.

Mike, no.......It's time to kick him in his padded groin. Perry is welcome to come up and join in. I can't think of a better partner for this mission.

Hands on hips was good enough. The left had flip diverting attention to his object is......... Palmeresque.

Sorry, that's in the scan/holder - I've had this card before anyone was routinely trimming - only reason I never considered grading is the centering.
