Purchase from Memeber help

I'm new to the board and am contemplating making a purchase from a member. The member is wanting a cashiers check sent to a PO Box. I'm not able to view the profile. Looks like the member has been around for about 6 - 7 months. Should I be concerned, is there something I should do to protect myself?

  • post his name and ask for a reference. I wouldn't care if you asked that of me.

I honestly would be concerned, as both of you are relatively newbies.

The PO Box does take a bit of faith, but ask why you can't send a check & have him hold the coin(s) until it clears, or maybe a PO MO?

Also, if you don't want to name him here, ask him for references.
Are the coins something you can't get from other members?

There is nothing wrong with asking for references and checking him out. If he wont/can't provide them, I'd be concerned and wouldn't do business with him, other than through an established escrow company, which might not be worth the cost or trouble.

  • As a relative newcomer who recently did purchase from another member (though a fairly well recognized individual here) I share your apprehension. I would strongly agree with the above advice re references!! It is a two way street though, and getting accepted as a SELLER also takes some time (esp if not a dealer, with a website, etc.)--- I would be hesitant to send to a P.O.box though, unless someone (or several) can vouch for the individual. The regulars here seem very trustworthy and honest

Most cashiers checks can have a stop payment put on them. Also many of the people here use Post Office Boxes for there coin transactions. Rather than there hame address that might not be as secure. Send it to him by certified mail so you can have proof of delivery.
And yes ask him to name a couple of references to you in a PM. Then you can PM the reference. We all have to get stared some way and all most of it takes is a little time. Neither of you should have to put out a great amount of time or extra money to make the deal work.

I had a similar situation with a new seller selling me a long list of coins.

I sent her a check for a small amount for a few of the coins, then we did the same thing for a few more of the coins. When this second shipments arrives, I'll send her the rest of the money and they'll send me the rest of the coins.

In this manner we are building up trust, and I'll be able to offer her a good reference for any other transactions she makes here.
  • No Problem ask for references for a seller or a buyer. I have sold and purchased some very nice coins from a lot of the board members and have never had any problems and consider myself to be associated with many of the board members that I would never have meet if not for the PCGS Forums.
