Bubble Wrap Ok for long term storage?

I don't mean next to the coin surface, but say wrapping a 2x2 or a saflip (which is of course PVC free). Does bubble wrap utilize pvc? I've heard some say/speculate that plastic binder sheets with pvc can even damage a coin in a 2x2, via fume transfer.
Thanks!

  • Why? Put them in archival boxes instead.
  • "vinyl" (V) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC)

used for short-term business document storage
Not suitable for archival storage purposes
    good transparency (clarity)
    chemical and weather resistant
    scratch-proof
"all PVC polymers are degraded by light and heat, hydrogen chloride is eliminated and oxidation occurs"
    retains water (8%)
"chemicals used to make this type of plastic can react with water vapor to form hydrochloric acid and quickly damage a paper collection."
uses: "leatherette" fabric, gloves, flying discs, carpet & flooring, pipes, exterior siding, 3-ring binders, bubble wrap.
not recommended for use with silver.

I don't see any need for such a material to be used - storage materials designed for the use you intend are a much better choice.

PS - MrSpud will have more info on this I think.

Most coins that I've received in the mail came in bubble wrapped lined envelopes. I'm cataloging and transferring them into saflips, 2x2s, and intercept shields, and then into binder sheets and binders. Just wondering if it is ok to keep them in the padded envelopes while I'm working out longer term solutions. I guess I shouldn't to be safe. bubble wrap is a good way to pad them!

    Thanks guys.

I'm not sure of the very, very long term effects on coins in anything but I've had coins since I was a kid, around 60 years now, in Whitman Classic books and still look the same as when I put them there. I made a pen holder out of liquid plastic in 1959 with new pennies and dimes in it and it still sits on my desk looking the same as when I put them in there. I've got a type set in 2"x2" holders that are in plastic sheets that have been there for about 20 to 30 years now and no difference in the coins. I wrapped a bunch of silver stuff received from my wedding in plastic sheets like surrand wrap from back in the 60's and just dug it out to give to my son's wife. It still looked like the day I put it there. To sum it all up if any type of plastic is going to effect a coin it may take a few hundred years from my experience. I'll let you know what all mine look like in a few hundred years and if any discoloration I'll change the system.

What about plastics with unknown plasticizers or PVC then? What about the hazing on Proofs from the pliofilm used for Proof sets in the late 50's/60's? What about the yellowed Capital Plastics holders? Mine from the 80's were yellowed by the 90's.
