GOETZ: K-295 The Brothel Decree

K-295 THE BROTHEL DECREE, 1923, Cast AE, 61mm, UNC.

This medal was made to commemorate a decree made by the 128th French Division to open brothels for the French occupation troops.

Obverse: Inscription; ‘The Brothel Nation!,’ with strutting phallic-headed Gallic coq which wears an assault helmet.

Reverse: Inscribed; ‘January 16, 1923,’ additional kiosk inscription ‘Brothel decree of the 128 French Division on the Ruhr.’ French soldier is shown assaulting a German woman in Ruhr, as evidenced by the smokestacks of the industrialized area.

This is another of Goetz’ more biting and controversial designs. Note the Dachshund lifting its leg on the decree. I have noticed on a number of medals where this Dachshund appears…usually at large political rallies and usually pissing on something associated with the activity. Perhaps this ‘dog’ is Goetz or the symbolization of Goetz’ opinion…

This piece is more apt to stir up sides of the argument even than others you have shown. I'll skip the obvious bits and talk about the Dachshund. Can you show (or link) other medals where he shows up?
