Morgan dollar collector's question

wildjagwildjag Posts: 1,335 ✭✭✭
I inherited 20 1921 Morgan dollars, mintmarks are 7-P's, 6-D's and 7-S's. I think all are circulated, some better than others. I don't collect Morgans so I know very little about them.

My questions are - are they worth my time posting them to Ebay? Sell them for melt?
Any varieties I should look for? Any help is appreciated.

Here is a photo of one of the better coins.

For the S mintmarks, look for the thornhead series VAM 1Bx.

For the D MMs, look for most any die break.

For the P MMs, check for pitted reverses.

These are only a few. Some are worth lots of money, others are not.

Check out Rob's website at www.rjrc.com and click on VAM Identification Help. Scroll down to the 1921D link and the thornhead link as well as the pitted reverse link.

These will be good starting places.
  • Seems like the 21Ss bring a little more than the Ps and Ds.I'd start them on ebay for 99 cents and see where they go.

    edit to add

Only after examining them with a ten X magnifier for VAMS and die cracks.
  • Unless there is something about a 1921 that makes it unusual, they aren't worth much more than melt in circulated condition.

There are vams with all three m/m. Before selling for melt or e-bay research them. try here link

Most (but not all) varities can be found by reviewing the lettering at the edge (E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES AMERICA ONE DOLLAR). Forget die cracks, look for die breaks, as the photos below show. There are a few dozen different ones known, so the best thing is to review the coins under moderate magnification. When you find something strange, post a photo here.

Some 21-P, 21-D, and 21-S varities are selling for very high premiums. It's worth time to review "common coins".

In addition to the die breaks Jack mentions on 21-D coins, look for infrequent reeding on 21-P coins and a die gouge across Liberty's cap on the 21-S coins (diagnostic for all 1Bx "Thornhead" varieties). If you don't find anything interesting, you should be able to get about $8 per coin (assuming they're all circulated) on the "Buy, Sell & Trade" board without having to pay eBay anything.

The morgan you have pictured looks like its been harshly cleaned- if the others look similar (with lots of hairlines covering the fields and devices), then make sure you mention that on any ebay listings....

Hold all of the Philadelphias as if they are in a roll and look at the reeding. There is a variety with less reeds. It's easy to tell if you have one. I have a plastic roll full of 1921 Philadelphias and there is one in there.
  • Worth about $10 each. Put them up on Ebay as a roll. Should bring $180 or so.
