PCGS Grading Question

bosoxbosox Posts: 1,559 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have a valuable mint state coin in an old green PCGS holder that I think should be graded higher. I'd like to submit it to PCGS as a regrade.

I have heard that they no longer guarantee that a green holdered coin will not grade lower. Does anybody know if this is really true? Since they advertise that they crack out regrades and grade the coins raw, if it is true it seems I would risk a downgrade.

Bottom line, I'd like to get it into a new blue holder at the same grade or maybe even higher. Any ideas on how best to proceed?

  • you can just have it reholdered, or submit for regrade with the minimum at what the old holder is.

Rob - 1st I've heard of them not guaranteeing (sp) the green labels. I've sent a few green (and yellow) holders in over the past 3 years for regrade (rather than reholder), all came back with the same grade (no ups or downs). In fact, I've got a 1920 small cent waiting for pickup at the PO that was just regraded as 66RD. It was in a green holder.

Thanks, Gene. I was hoping that what I heard about green labels was BS.

PCGS has a grading guarantee. If you send the coin in the PCGS holder and they downgrade it, then they will pay you the difference in value.

If you crack it out, there's no guarantee. link
