1801 - Peace of Luneville

My apologies if I've shown this one before, I don't think so but my brain is like swiss cheese these days! image

I've always loved this particular medal, the Consulate period after Marengo was a hopeful one with the world holding its breath to see if peace could be established. Ultimately it didn't hold but diaries of the time are so expectant...

The reverse is full of symbolism, the sun of peace shines brightly on France while clouds obscure England and lightning strikes the island. Though the Republican calendar still has about three more years to run this medal uses both that dating system and the Gregorian. It's a beautifully toned medal which my poor photos only hint at.
