Sede Vacante no more...

You guys wanting these are way behind the times...

How long before the Benedict XVI coins arrive then? image

(Yes we have a new Pope!)

Joseph Ratzinger... no real surprise there then.

As I recall, both JP I and JP II were elected on the 1st or 2nd days too and there are Sede pieces issued for the interregum period before each so I imagine a Sede issue will be forthcoming in any case (and are probably already struck - the stamps came out last week).

I'd guess the coins and medals of Ben 16th will be out in May....anyone else willing to hazard a guess?

  • Dunno, but they'll be overpriced for a while.
  • I'll be honest i'm amazed at how quick they were, everyone said there was no real way to know who they'd pick, no clear contender... although Ratzinger was in the running.

Two days and they've picked! I was expecting something kinda on thursday or friday.

Ratzinger ain't no spring chicken neither, he turned 78 last saturday. Must be a nice delayed birthday present for him, the top of the tree.

the church really did not want another 20-30 year pope right now - too many things in transition and too many issues to decide. this will be a transitional period until things settle down some and then they will elect another long-time pope (at least imho).

I think you have a great point Cecil.

don't really want to turn this into a theological thread, but the church needs time to digest the passing of JPII and to set a course for the next hundred or so years... the other thing going on is that JPII appointed most of the cardinals who elected his successor, so I don't think the current stances on doctrine and philosophy will be changing much, regardless of who was elected.

So what happens when you guys get a new pope (other than a change in Vatican coinage)? Do the streets of Rome look like Detroit when the Pistons win (or lose) the NBA Championship?

St. Malachy was a man whom many years ago (12th century), wrote 111 lines (or 112), one line for each Pope, a description of each. (kinda like Nostradamus)

    Here's some stuff from here;

    Text

It was thought that line 111 'Gloria olivæ' (i.e this pope) would either be on a peace mission or would be associated in someway with olives, the Benedictine oder thought that he would come from their order.

As it happens he would take the name Benedict.

    Interesting thought provoking stuff.

Amusingly Benedict was pictured holding some olive branches last month. But i think many other cardinals were too... I guess it's all what you read into it.

This is also my information. I've just returned the order form for the 2005 coin set, wich will be issued on (normally) on Apr.28.2005.

With fortunate circumstances I will receive a set directly from Vatican. As usual the allocation will last for several months.
In my opinion the sede vacante coin will be issued earliest in this years fall, maybe I am mistaken of course.

Well, ... I was wrong image

UFN will issue a Sede Vacante coin set (containing 8 coins - 1 Cent - 2 Euro).

Mintage will be 60.000, price is 30 Euro --> coin set

And also a Sede Vacante 5 Euro silver coin

Mintage of this coin will be 13.440, price is 50 Euro image --> Silver coin

Issue Date of both: Juni 30.2005

This is big news. This is the first time in a long time that a full set of sedes will be issued. 2 coins were issued in 1939, single coins to note the event were issued in 1958, 1963, 1978 and 1978.

Is it possible to order these directly from the Vatican?

Yes it is possible, but you need to be a registered customer at the Ufficio Filatelico e Numismatico.

It took me 2 years to get my customer number there.

One of the luckiest things I ever did was to get on the Vaticans mailing list before they converted to the Euro. I get order forms from them a couple of times a year, order 100 proof sets and 500 mint sets and then sit back and wait. A few months later I will get a package from the Vatican with one or two Proof sets and five to ten Mint sets. This year they surprised me by sending me seven of the 2 Euro commemorative bi-metallic coins, which I dont recall orderingimage Every time a package comes in from the Vatican, its like Christmas in July image

I like the Sede Vacante silver coin, but I think I'll wait and but one on eBay for half the price the Vatican is asking.

You are very optimistic Michael. image I don`t think you will get it for the half price, maybe less under ask price.

Later issues this year will be:

    1. Silver commemorative Coin - 5 Euros: Theme to be defined

    2. Silver commemorative Coin - 10 Euros: The Eucharistic Year
