Orange background, but many do not recognize it as a legit variation, only a misprint.
  • Cobb with Cobb back is tougher than the Magie Error.

  • Cobb back is the tuffest card in the hobby. Yes even tougher then the Wagner.

I once heard that the Cobb/Cobb card could have been a promotional item instead of an actual part of the set.

  • Tough to say. There are Ty Cobb tobacco tins out there, but not many. I think the difference between "promotional item" and "micro-regional issue with short-released tobacco product" for something that's coming up on its 95th birthday is pretty slim, regardless.

have you ever seen another card besides the Cobb with a COBB back?

especially for type collectors, you have to draw the line somewhere when it comes to promotional items.

"proofs", printers scrap, cards cut out of notebooks and advertising pieces are kinda of difficult to consider "baseball cards" in the traditional way

I see your point. I just disagree that only putting only one card in one brand of tobacco product makes it a promotional item any more than every t206 (and other) tobacco card was a promotional item.

The Cobb/Cobb only becomes a problem for type collectors if you decide it's not a t206. If you're talking about "back" collectors, then that's one that every collector should decide for him/herself. It's easy for me to say, "Sure, it's a t206," because I have no dreams or aspirations of ever completing the t206 set, or a full run of backs. If I had the money to afford one, would I want a Cobb/Cobb? Darn skippy I would. If you don't want to define it as part of the set, that's fine. When I see them sold at auction, I can only recall them being sold as "rare t206" cards. I cannot recall one being sold as a proof or pure promotional item.

I never said those things should be considered baseball cards. I am not convinced that the Cobb/Cobb falls into any of those categories, either.

If we disagree on this, no biggie. I don't think there's a "wrong" way to collect t206.

I do agree with you that the Cobb/COBB back is a probably a legitimate card.

My point about it being a promotional item didnt come out as a wanted it to, after all there are tons of regional food cards out there as well other examples

However i am not so sure its truly a part of the t-206 set.

this card probably did not come from a pack of cigarettes like every other single card from the set but most likely from a promotional spin off of his own tabacco tin that beared his name.

Its the only card with a back that can not be found on any other card from the set and the distribution was different as well

for a type collector this card should not be part of the t-206 set

And yes if i would love to be able to afford this card, hell i would be happy just to look look at it.

  • The Cobb Orange background is nothing more than a defect. No serios collecror gives that item any recogntion. Although i would not call it the rarest card in the hobby, the Cobb with Cobb back is rarer than a Magie, Plank or Wagner. Robert Edward Auctions is selling one right now in an SGC 30.
